Is there a way to use a VMDK directly with coLinux?
VDI pre-allocates the disk space when creating the disk file, but VMDK does
it on demand which may save a lot of disk space for me.

Use mkfile [1,2] and the sparse option "-s" to create a new empty image.
Than copy all files from any pre-installated or running image to that
image. See FAQ in the wiki28 with a short step guide.
