What is the difference between the two debian installs then? One is quite

If you mean the image files, not much. I think most of them are near
minimal 'base' systems, ready to start but containing very little
applications. Usually you start by updating the package system (in debian,
apt-get update and then apt-get dist-upgrade) and then installing some
packages that you are interested in (xterm, mozilla-firefox, gcc, ...).
Notice that (at least the images I've tried) are unstable/testing, meaning
some packages might be broken at times.
If you are new to linux, or have not used spesific distribution for a
while, it is really good idea to read their documentation, eg.,
www.debian.org.
