Thanks Henri. But Woody and 2.4.x kernels are definitely even older than the sarge I want to replace! Etch comes with a 2.6.18 kernel and uses udev - that was my primary concern. So I if read you correctly, colinux 0.7.0 will come with a 2.6.12 kernel - what does colinux 0.8.x use? Can I expect 2.6.12 to play nicely with the debian 4 startup sequence, and udev on the fly device creation (I barely know what I am talking about). As I said i don't want to lose colinux's unique ability to let me run the very same linux installation i can also choose to boot natively. Ideally I'd free some disk space and install etch to a new parttion, but it's so damn hard to figure out the correct \Device\HarddiskX\PartitionY ! Also here there tentative release dates for the upcoming 0.7 and 0.8 versions? |

Hello. Recently, Debian's etch stable released but colinux's root file system isn't found anywhere. Moreover kernel version seems to be different from current coLinux's kernel version too. I heard kernel can work with some patch. So Someone please make colinux's etch root FS and kernel, and please post them to SourceForge. My skill doesn't reach to that level. My best regard. Pooka |

For the first boot you can also boot without initrd. Remove initrd from the xml config (or comment it out). > default.colinux.xml file. (That way I am certain I am not making a > typo.) The image file, you have renamed to 'root_fs' should exist in the directory c:\coLinux\, if use the default.colinux.xml, check it with an simple 'dir c:\coLinux\root_fs' in the same command prompt, you later try to start coLinux with: cd c:\coLinux dir c:\coLinux\root_fs colinux-daemon.exe -c default.colinux.xml > Cooperative Linux Daemon, 0.6.4 > Compiled on Mon May 29 22:19:09 2006 > > mapping cobd0 to \DosDevices\c:\coLinux\root_fs > mapping cobd1 to \DosDevices\c:\coLinux\swap_device > [...] > VFS: Cannot open root device "cobd0" or unknown-block(117,0) > Please append a correct "root=" boot option > Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on > unknown-block(117,0) This is mostly an typofix in your filename of root_fs, or you have not uncompressed it, or the image file is demarged or incomplete. If you use the windows explorer, be shure, that you see the file extension "*.bz2", it's default hidden. -- Henry |

I'm not known about Debian versions and kernel depencies. From my installations I know coLinux 0.6.4, 0.7.1 and 0.8.x runs on a Debian Woody. The coLinux limit is only, you should have the same binaries for Windows, the Linux kernel and the modules. Your system binaries (under /bin, /sbin and so) can be different. Unpack the Modules vmlinux-modules.tar.gz from new colinux under /lib/modules/2.6.12-co-0.7.1, this is the only upgrade you need in your dual boot. CoLinux versions 0.6.4, 0.7.1 and 0.8.0 runs also on my SuSE 9.0 dual boot with an original 2.4.21 kernel. From my SuSE I know, that you can run every coLinux on an older distry. For very old distries with kernel 2.4.x you need to upgrade only the module-init-tools with fallback for 2.4-kernels. You can not run a new coLinux Windows (*.exe) with an older coLinux kernel from an other build. Eatch coLinux release Version supports only exactly one kernel version. -- Henry |

Thank you again! Regards, Phil |

Hi, I was trying to use coLinux 0.6.4, but no matter what I try it won't recognize the root file system. It seems like the problem is either the initrd.gz file, or the kernel. I am not sure which. For example I downloaded the Debian image and renamed it root_fs so I could use the default.colinux.xml file. (That way I am certain I am not making a typo.) I recently setup my native linux operating system to run under coLinux. It was amazing! Unfortunately, after a couple of hours colinux became so slow that it was unusable. The Xrealvnc executable was using about 75% of the colinux CPU, and the colinux-daemon about 80-90% of the Windows XP CPU. I have no previous experience with the VNC server. My KDE desktop demands a lot of resources to run all the applications. Is this a known issue with VNC? Is Cgywin X more suitable for more instensive use? (I haven't tried it out yet.) Thanks, James |

Hello, I currently have colinux 0.6.3 setup to boot my HD-installation of debian sarge. What I really like and (as far as i can tell) only colinux can offer is the ability to run the very same linux i can start via dual-boot, not just an image. That's neat. Now sarge is aging, and i'd like to either upgrade or re-install the recently released etch version. I am wondering, though, if this has a chance to keep on working with the older kernel official colinux uses? Would a snapshot of 0.7.1 or even 0.8 be required to run an etch install (particularly wrt udev). |

There are a few issues here 1) Stable has updated twice since 3.0 (first Sarge [3.1] and now Etch [4.0]) so it is unlikely that the APT locations are still valid. 2) You're running out of allocated space for packages, this is a known fault when updating to Etch. See the release notes for a solution. I would suggest using a more recent image. I would also suggest acquainting yourself with the target operating system in a full virtual machine (e.g. one of VMWare's products) or a fully fledged box. I was trying to install the sshfs debian package which depends on fuse-utils. The install chokes when trying to start the fuse module. I am using colinux 0.7.1. Is the fuse module compatible with colinux? Or do I need to recompile the kernel to make this work? Thanks for any and all help. GMc |
