Hello. CoLinux is very old and not maintained for a lot of time and I'm not interested in resurrecting it (and I don't have the competences to do it),BUT I'm interested to gather some information about a similar project that I have in mind. What about if,instead of having a Linux kernel which can run Windows cooperatively,we have a Linux kernel that can run more Linux distributions (maybe only 2 as a starting point,as CoLinux already does) at the same time, without using virtualization software ? Is anyone interested to study how much is doable ? Which kind of technical problems could be ? Which limitations could there be ? How interesting is this project in your opinion ? -- Mario. |

Hello, a build guide you will find in source and in the Wiki: http://svn.code.sf.net/p/colinux/code/branches/devel/doc/building http://svn.code.sf.net/p/colinux/code/branches/devel/doc/building Building under CygWin is not possible. The basic of coLinux build system compiles the Linux kernel, and this can not du under Cygwin. An other problem are the used soft links inside the build process would not work under Cygwin. I am looking for tutorials on developing coLinux. I am looking for tutorials on developing all parts of this software. I would also be looking to develop CYGWIN too if you know how. My goal is to compile applications like synaptic, jackd, alsa, guitarix rakarrack pulseaudio, portaudio, opengl,wx,gtk etcetera, underneath your software. and underneath CYGWIN This way I could use guitarix and rakarrack without having to install linux on a computer. It would be super beneficial and it will aid in the development and reach of your software if you provide detailed tutorials on how to do this stuff. if you want to get really ambitious, you can compile macintosh software using CYGWIN and coLInux, then things get really interesting but yeah tutorials on everything and anything related to developing coLInux and or CYGWIN would be great! Thanks -Ty |

ALL i want to know... is what is the progress on the 64-bit port of CoLinux, please? Am I stuck with running only the 32-bit version? that really sucks! :( The oDesk site is closed down (they cancelled the 64 bit port project). And nobody seems to have a solid idea how to get past the pthreads limitation without using a virtualized environment or emulator? :( I would have figured there would be more progress on this since 2006 already but what is causing everyone to drag their feet??? There are many apps that I need to use that are found ONLY in Linux / GNU world, and NOT in Windows world (this should be a VICTORY for the GPL / FOSS universe and fan / user base, but apparently it is not quite fully realized yet!) sigh -- ---- - E-mail .SIGnature file, Personal/plain-text, v0.01a (RFC3676: non-compliant) (user: "Ryan D. Shao, If I remember correctly the biggest obstacle to coLinux using more modern kernel was a change in how the Memory was dealt with. Around the version that coLinux got stuck at there was a change to NUMA memory access which made Linux better for larger memory configurations, but created enough difference that it was problematic to bring coLinux patches in line with the kernel AND still map between the coLinux driver and Windows Memory... It's been a really long time so my memory could be off... Category: Interface Improvements (example) Group: Next Release (example) Status: Closed Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Peter Kuznetsov (peter_kuznetsov) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: Driver name as parameter Initial Comment: For debuging purposes it will be very usefull to add options for changing driver name instead of linux.sys. Example: colinux-daemon.exe --remove-driver-name colinux-0.80-00.sys colinux-daemon.exe --install-driver-name colinux-0.80-01.sys ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: George P Boutwell (gboutwel) Date: 2013-04-19 13:16 Message: Henry, What if the coLinux-0.8.x Linux needed to remain running, wouldn't running colinux-daemon.exe --remove-driver shutdown the running Linux instance? ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Comment By: Henry N. (henryn) Date: 2011-02-06 12:34 Message: This would not need. A colinux.sys must close to the same colinux-daemon.exe. So, hold any versions of coLinux in a separate directory, and you can do: cd .../coLinux-0.8.x colinux-daemon.exe --remove-driver colinux-daemon.exe --install-driver cd .../coLinux-0.8.y colinux-daemon.exe --remove-driver colinux-daemon.exe --install-driver It's very simple and I'm using this way for long time with multiple of coLinux versions. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=622066&aid=2891618&group_id=98788 |

Since the patches are falling further behind modern Linux, it seems to be getting harder and harder to run a modern (think "non-end-of-life") Linux distribution in coLinux. Is the paravirt path one which coLinux could really take? Are there obstacles besides development time, such as design decisions needing to be revisited? - Shao Miller ________________________________________ From: yin sun [mailto:sun...@gm...] Sent: Thursday, September 27, 2012 20:42 To: Shao Miller Cc: col...@li... Subject: Re: [coLinux-devel] Porting a Kernel I had thought about this. the two approaches we can learn from is lguest and paravirt. basically colinux could be another architecture in kernel tree on host and guest implement something similar to paravirt-ops. (henryn) Date: 2009-11-03 12:58 Message: The warnings Driver 'sd' needs updating - please use bus_type methods Driver 'sr' needs updating - please use bus_type methods are harmless. The Bug at COSCSI: response: use_sg (2) > 1! is more a real problem. There a variable has two buffers, but the caller of function only should fill a single buffer, and the function can only run with a single buffer. If that bug line was triggered, then something is real wrong. I will try to replace the "panic" into a "warning". So we would see the stack backtrace from callers. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- You can respond by visiting: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&atid=622063&aid=2890857&group_id=98788 |

Category: Linux Kernel Group: v0.7.x (release) Status: Open Resolution: None Priority: 5 Private: No Submitted By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Assigned to: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) Summary: wget'ing something makes audio chirp on host Initial Comment: Hi, I would like to report a strange thing that I found using colinux 0.7.9-RC4. When I use an ArchLinux guest and wget something (preferably something large like an iso) my foobar player on the host (Windows XP 32bit) plays chirps through my music (MP3 files). When wget finishes or is killed, it keeps chirping until the buffer is refreshed (typically 0.5 buffer length). So it seems the audio buffer gets corrupted while it is filled. But it gets stranger: - Media Player Classic with ffdshow seems to chirp only when I play an audio or a video file which has AAC or AC3 audio. - MP3 in MPC is not affected when decoded with the libmad decoder, but does chirp when decoded with libavcodec. - Rarely I see artifacts in the video while wget'ing. - When I lower the buffer length in foobar (to 50ms) and start wget, the chirping is instant. - When I increase the buffer in foobar (to 16s) and start wget, the chirping takes a long while to kick in, but keeps on going while wget is finished or killed. - Using different output precisions in foobar gave me these results: -- 8bit + non-dithered: chirpes -- 8bit + dithered: doesn't chirp -- 16bit + non-dithered: doesn't chirp -- 16bit + dithered: doesn't chirp -- 24bit: chirpes (dithering unavailable) -- 32bit: not supported by soundcard, sounds awful. - BTW: My soundcard is a Soundblaster Audigy SE 24bit. - Firefox on the host seems to crash a lot more when wget'ing in a guest and a flash movie is playing on the host (youtube). - Rarely I see artifacts in youtube video's while wget'ing. So I tried isolating the problem: - dd'ing 200megs from /dev/full to a file. No chirping. - wget using an external server (linux iso fetching). Chirpes. - wget using an internal server (binary blob fetching). Chirpes. - Running netio, client on guest, server on host (tcp using default port and port 80). No chirping. - Running netio, server on guest, client on host (tcp using default port and port 80). No chirping. - Using pcap-bridge instead of ndis-bridge. Both chirp. - Using Debian Lenny guest, I recently upgraded the Archlinux guest and it uses quite cuting-edge packages, Debian should be more old fashioned. Still chirpes. - Written a little program to do a lot of floating point operations. Doesn't chirp. - Written a little program to do a lot of memory allocation operations. Doesn't chirp. - wget using the guest as server (binary blob fetching), no real network involved. Chirpes. - Download the binary blob from the guest to the host (reverse http transfer). Doesn't chirp. Seems only wget causes the problem to surface. And it seems to me like a memory corruption somewhere. Hopefully this rings a bell with someone and can be fixed easily. Keep up the good work.
