I’ve got my colinux with gentoo working nicely. Been up and running for a week now. So I thought I’d venture onto getting some nice graphical apps going. But I’m having some trouble. My main source of info was from
my setup is using X-win32.
My current attempt is done by ssh’ing into it and setting putty to enable X11 forwarding. I then open X-win32 and setup a XDMPC Query set to the gentoo box’s IP.
And of course I do the export DISPLAY=windowsbox with X-win32
It must ½ work because if I type xterm, xcalc, bitmap, any of those simple Xclient apps it will popup and be usable thanks to X-win32.
Now what I’m trying to do is what they have setup at my uni, they have an older version of X-win32 and we can use that to connect to their servers, and can use KDE and stuff like that.
So I type X or startx or xinit. But they all come up with the same thing:
(==) Log file: "/var/log/XFree86.0.log", Time: Mon Jul 19 00:46:03 2004
(EE) Unable to locate/open config file
(EE) Error from xf86HandleConfigFile()
Fatal server error:
no screens found
so I must be missing out just one small very simple step that I can’t find anywhere.
I made sure I did as much research and put down as much info as I could rather than a “its not working, make it work” post you usually see so hopefully will encourage someone to reply ;)
