    Installed colinux 0.6.2 onto G partition 'cos not enough C drive space  - and WinPcap all onto Windows 2000.

    My xml config file:

    <?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
    <colinux>

        <block_device index="0" path="\DosDevices\G:\coLinux\redhat_9_shrike-i386-disc1" enabled="true" />

        <block_device index="1" path="\DosDevices\G:\coLinux\swap_device" enabled="true" />

        <bootparams>root=/dev/cobd0 </bootparams>

        <initrd path="initrd.gz" />

        <image path="vmlinux" />

        <memory size="128" />

        <network index="0" type="tap" />
    </colinux>

    I run: colinux-daemon.exe -t nt -c default.colinux.xml

    All seems oK til end:

    NET: Registered protocol family 17
    RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
    VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
    VFS: Cannot open root device "cobd0/redhat_9_shrike-i386-disc1" or unknown-blo
    (0,0)
    Please append a correct "root=" boot option
    Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

    Thanks

      Where'd you get the redhat_9_shrike-i386-disc1 image?  It should be a plain jane image file with no partitions and no headers or offsets.  If it's an VMWare or any other image, then it probably won't work without converting.

      From the person in the next room! By image I understood an iso file? so I used that. I am just learning about Linux and have been testing various installations, some great ones like MEPIS. So what is an image in this context? There is a lot of new/different jargon to learn...

      you can't install linux from a cd iso (until a little edit) so you need to download a file that contains a preinstalled distribution and use it as a real harddisk under colinux

      you can get a fedora core (similarm to redhat)image here at sourceforge http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/colinux/colinux_minimal_fedora_core_1.zip?download

      there is a nice howto inside)

      Sorry! with this message

      RAMDISK: Compressed image found at block 0
      VFS: Mounted root (ext2 filesystem).
      Kernel panic - not syncing: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on unknown-block(0,0)

      You need to uncompress the image you downloaded from SF to an file, then point your XML config to the uncompressed file.
