I accidentally started coLinux on a disabled TAP
device, when that was my primary ethernet device.
Instead of getting a "that device cannot be found/isn't
enabled" error, all of colinux-net-daemon crashed,
while coLinux itself hung in a state of booting.

    What version of coLinux?

Just tried this with latest build from source... If the TAP
device is disabled, it give an odd error message (specified
file not found), but it does not crash the
colinux-net-daemon, and coLinux itself boots normally,
    except that eth0 is non-functional.
