Three reasons I can think of for the breakage: 1 - If you are running your server in a non-graphical environment (i.e. without a windowing environment like X), you need to start the JVM (for Tomcat) with the -Djava.awt.headless=true property. In non-graphical environments without this property set, JFreeChart cannot init (as it expects to find a graphical environment). It works fine with the property set, though. 2 - Perhaps your WEB-INF/lib/jfreechart-0.9.21.jar file is corrupt or unreadable?
