I downloaded the new source release. I am in a Webapp environement, without jboss. I've noticed a few build problem that I report, because I think it's important for new users to not waste time to fix them. - ant targets : is it not possible to set a flag in the build.properties to choose the jboss or webapp target instead of duplicating so many ant targets ? I think of the IF attribute of the target tag. - in each build.properties of the different modules, you have a hardcoded reference to the coefficient.path=/home/detkin/cvs/coefficient, is it not possible to have a default global coefficient.path defined for every module build ? maybe in the modules-common.ent ? - the target "make-webapp-release" cant be successful if you are in a webapp-only context (no link to jboss) >BUILD FAILED >F:\tools\coefficient\build.xml:451: F:\tools\coefficient\{PATH_TO_JBOSS}\client not found. Dylan Etkin ISTC +27 12 841 3200 >>> Dylan Etkin 2004/11/17 09:17:03 AM >>> Hi Mike, I am terribly sorry about this. They say that imitation is the most sincere form of flattery and that is all I truly meant by imitating the JIRA issue tracker. When we decided to do an issue tracker we wanted to emulate what we felt was an excellent product and we all thought that was JIRA. We did have a graphic artist alter the icons to a degree but I can totally see how that is not enough. I have removed the current release from sourceforge and I will re-release the latest version with the issue tracker removed as a short-term solution. We will then work to replace the icons as a first step, and then will try to change the layout before we re-release it. You can take heart in the fact that our issue tracker is much less feature rich and much more buggy than the actual JIRA product, but it is true that we copied layout, most html and the graphics from your product. Somehow we thought that being such an incomplete implementation with a different back-end made it O.K. but I totally see that it is not and am sorry. This issue tracker has actually been available for about a year but I guess it has only now gotten attention. I really respect your support of the open source community with your JIRA installations and other initiatives and I do not want sour any future relationships we may have with your organization. As to the comment on the serverside thread there is no association with the user who posted it, and as I hope this email shows, it is not an opinion shared by anyone on the coefficient team. Please let me know if these steps are sufficient. And once again I would like to offer my apologies and try to sincerely express that theft was not our intent, we truly were just trying to copy an excellent UI, but it is now very clear that we crossed a line and I am sorry. Sincere Apologies, Dylan Etkin Dylan Etkin ISTC +27 12 841 3200 >>> Mike Cannon-Brookes <mi...@at...> 2004/11/17 04:32:37 AM >>> Hi there, I'm emailing you because (according to the website) you're the Coefficient development team. As you may know I am one of the two founders of Atlassian, and we make the JIRA issue tracker. Quite a few of our customers emailed to point us to this thread today: http://www.theserverside.com/news/thread.tss?thread_id=29994 First - I'd like to say up front that I'm a huge supporter of Open Source in general, and our company spends a lot of money and developer time working on Open Source projects. Second - I think the Coefficient idea is good, and the project itself looks like it's off to a good start - well done! I would however like to voice my complaint about the way that a lot of our interface and especially our intellectual property has been 'lifted' (to put it nicely). The icons used in your issue tracker are ours - plain and simple - I know that because I and our graphic designer drew them. The screen layouts, help text, UI - even down to rendering bugs (!) - are identical in many places. As a second point, I would also like to take serious issue with one of the poster's in that thread (I'm not sure how associated they are with the project) >> The icons are taken directly from Jira > Indeed. But i do not see a big deal in it. > If Attlassian will complain, icons can be easily replaced. No - this is a big deal. Please take this as my official complaint and notice that I would like all of our icons and interface elements removed from Coefficient. - to borrow something or check something in accidentally is one thing, - to blatantly steal it, admit it and then not seem to care is quite another. I hope this matter can be resolved amicably and quickly - if nothing else it makes Coefficient look extremely poor in the eyes of the Open Source world and I'm sure you don't want that either. Please let me know what you intend to do about it all. That seems like a strange error. We have the format target that uses jalopy= to do code formatting but we do not have that target tied into any other t= argets as a dependancy, it reeks havok with CVS to format the code everytim= e you build. Hi Charles-Alexandre, We are always happy to have someone contribute to the code base. I think the first step is to get things running and then you can take a crack at some code. We don't have a formal policy on membership but before we extend commit rights we like to see some code contributions first just to see what your all about. The reason your having trouble building is that we use ant to build the src, and maven only to build the web-site (we have just never had the time to move our tricky ant stuff to tricky maven stuff). First I would suggest a cvs update. We are doing quite a bit of development at the moment and stuff changes a lot day to day. If you copy your build.properties.sample to build.properties and set all the variables correctly and then make sure that your src/misc/hibernate.properties file is setup correctly then doing an 'ant clean deploy-war' should get the webapp deployed for you. Give it a shot and shout if you run into issues. I know there are not a lot of developers on this mailing list but I feel as if the decisions effecting coefficient should be taken in a more open environment and at least have some record of the reasoning behind them. Therefore, this email. We have started another round of development on coefficient which is driven by the business need of a re-implementation of the dgroups project (http://www.dgroups.org). This release is focusing on cleaning up some look & feel, fixing some bugs, make projects more robust, and trying to make coefficient easier to use as a platform. The one place coefficient absolutely is terrible at is the way security and roles are handled. At the moment all modules know explicitly about the roles which are very hard coded into the system. If you want to use coefficient for another purpose and you have different role requirements you are pretty much out of luck and the existing modules become useless as well because of their heavy dependancy on the hard-coded roles. We have been discussing revamping coefficient with a very loosly coupled permission mechanism that will keep information in the DB but be totally configurable. The modules should then only have to know about a simple call, something like: SecurityService.canDoForPermission(user, permission, object) where object is not required. A drawback to this is that the configuration will not be trivial. Does anyone have any thoughts or imputs on this topic? Keep in mind that we need to know things like: can a user see a specific instance of an object (project member), what actions can a user execute in relation to given objects (can a user create a file on a project), etc... Dear Open Source developer I am doing a research project on "Fun and Software Development" in which I kindly invite you to participate. You will find the online survey under http://fasd.ethz.ch/qsf/. The questionnaire consists of 53 questions and you will need about 15 minutes to complete it. With the FASD project (Fun and Software Development) we want to define the motivational significance of fun when software developers decide to engage in Open Source projects. What is special about our research project is that a similar survey is planned with software developers in commercial firms. This procedure allows the immediate comparison between the involved individuals and the conditions of production of these two development models. Thus we hope to obtain substantial new insights to the phenomenon of Open Source Development. Hi Jonas, I sent this email on the 30th of April but perhaps it got lost. I am CC'ing this to the devel list as well. Sorry it has taken so long to get back to you, I was on leave for a while. It sounds like coefficient is still using the EJBInvokers to run, this tells the HibernateUtil to not commit since in EJB the container handles commits. Running in tomcat you want to make sure that your hibernate.properties is setup to use a strait JDBC connection and not a datasource AND to get the factory to use the tomcat invokers you must remove the EJBInvoker class file from your running system. This is a bad way to do this and in the next version we will change it, it is not hard to have the hibernateUtil find out if it is using a datasource or not, but the version you have still has the cludge. I hope this helps, please feel free to email any further questions, Dylan Etkin -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean. I just downloaded Coefficient in order to try it out. I'm very much interested in its workflow capabilities because our department needs just such a tool. I installed Coefficient 0.9 on Tomcat 5.0.19 and things seem to work very well up until the point where I try to create a user. When I have filled in the values for username, password, name and so on, and click to accept, Coefficient dies with the following Java error: 2004-04-21 11:12:47 StandardWrapperValve[CoefficientServlet]: Servlet.service() for servlet CoefficientServlet threw exception java.lang.ClassCastException at za.org.coefficient.aspects.logging.CoefficientLoggingAspect.ajc$after $za_org_coefficient_aspects_logging_CoefficientLoggingAspect$1aa6(CoefficientLog gingAspect.java:187) In catalina.out I get the following error: 2004-apr-21 11:12:47 net.sf.hibernate.util.JDBCExceptionReporter logWarnings VARNING: SQL Warning: 0, SQLState: null 2004-apr-21 11:12:47 net.sf.hibernate.util.JDBCExceptionReporter logWarnings VARNING: WARNING: COMMIT: no transaction in progress Any takers? I would've posted to coefficient-user, but alas, that list doesn't seem to exist. -- Jonas Öberg Systems administrator/webmaster, Department of Informatics, School of Economics and Commercial Law, Gothenburg University. Hi All, Now that we have an initial release of coefficient to work from we need to layout a roadmap to a 1.0 release. We should determine what features are essential and what kind of bug level we are willing to live with. I am currently working on an IssueTracking module that is a clone of JIRA. This should be done within 1 1/2 weeks. Next on my plate is to add mailling lists support. Another issue I think is of great importance is improved error handling. We need a centralized mechanism for doing field validation. I will welcome any suggestions on direction and timeframe. I would like to push twords a 1.0 release within the next 3 months, but that timeframe is just off the top of my head.
