You don't want to mess with these files. These are the MetaData stuff that is used by CVS to keep track of what has changed, how to roll back, etc.
When you go to check out a module, only type 'codebook' for the module name. It seems as though you typed 'codebook/CVSROOT', or just 'CVSROOT' for the module name. Make sure you set the path in Preferences to '/cvsroot/codebook', and then only type 'codebook' for the module name when checking out.

The following is my CVS log:
Python 2.2b2 (#26, Nov 16 2001, 11:44:11) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] on win32
CVSROOT: venussoftop@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/codebook (ssh authentication)
cvs checkout -P /cvsroot/codebook (in directory C:\vso3\CVSWork\CodeBook)
cvs server: cannot find module `/cvsroot/codebook' - ignored
cvs [checkout aborted]: cannot expand modules
*****CVS exited normally with code 1*****
I am sorry I wasn't able to checkout.
The link you had suggested is well for Admin Pref. But WinCVS 1.3.8.1 won't allow me to checkout without any pathing.

Hopefully I have reached a point where I can WinCVS.
I am asked for the Module Name and Path on the Server when I am trying to check out module.
I have tried all the obvious entries but I have failed.
Please let me know the same.

This is described on the CVS page on SourceForge (http://sourceforge.net/cvs/?group_id=50107). The setttings are:
Module Name: codebook
Path: /cvsroot/codebook

I did just that. Thanks. No wonder I was seeing all the other directories.
The codebook directory is very slow in coming over the wire. It's almost half an hour today and an hour yesterday. The log:
Python 2.2b2 (#26, Nov 16 2001, 11:44:11) [MSC 32 bit (Intel)] on win32
CVSROOT: venussoftop@cvs.sourceforge.net:/cvsroot/codebook (ssh authentication)
cvs checkout -P codebook (in directory C:\VSO3\CVS)
cvs server: Updating codebook
Haven't seen a single file come over yet. Any configurations on my part?
For your reference, the whole jing-bang *required* python (see log) or wincvs doesn't work at all.
Also maybe but I'm not sure the HOME and CVS_RSH environmental varaibles are required.
Thanks Ed for the response.
