Writing as much of the run-time in COBOL as possible A) allows COBOL programmers (your "users") to participate in the development B) Shows where "optimization" may be useful C) provides an EXCELLENT ongoing "test suite" *** NOTE: The MERANT (Micro Focus) compiler (actually "checker") is still written in COBOL. If you do NOT think it is a "good" language for such development, I question (a little) why you think the project should be done at all. COBOL *has become* a "general purpose" language - not just a business language. > -----Original Message----- > From: cob...@li... > [mailto:cob...@li...]On Behalf Of > Keisuke Nishida > Sent: Sunday, May 27, 2001 5:16 PM > To: Tim Josling > Cc: cob...@li... > Subject: Re: [Cobolforgcc-devel] COBOL compiler > > > At Sat, 26 May 2001 07:29:55 +1000, > Tim Josling wrote: > > > > TC is being written in C, but CB4G will have much of the runtime > > written in COBOL, using the core compiler subset. > > Why do you need to write the runtime in COBOL? > Isn't C a better language to write? > > > One approach is to ask for a task from one project and then do > > it.
