Betty, COBOL4GCC uses the GCC code generation back end for code generation. GCC also generates the debugging information. The program "GDB" is used as the debugger. The compoiuler front end captures the information and passes it to the code generation. It is then passed to the assembler as special pseudo-ops. There are numberous formats (see the doco on gcc -g option for details). The GCC site has a lot of documentation on this. Have a look at http://gcc.gnu.org.
