CMU fonts should be made using high-level processes

The current method of converting metafont sources involve tracing a bitmap, which is very inefficient, and introduce errors. Furthermore, the loss of high level font data can become a problem for future maintenance, especially for composite fonts, which also increase file sizes. CMU fonts should be converted via tools that convert instructions to a font format that preserves stroke paths (eg: SVG, postscript type 3), rather than converting from the font's appearence. Using this method, Fontforge or similar editor can improve the converted fonts with minimal maintenance.
