Is there any way to work around this so that a clone of one of the 
mirrored pairs would come up working?  It's easy enough to rebuild the 
other copy once the new system is running.

I think he wants to use a scsi system as the source, ide as the target, 
which might work if the partition labels are cloned, but otherwise would 
need a fixup in the grub configuration and /etc/fstab.  Going the other 
way ide->scsi would need a rebuild if the initrd to have the correct 
scsi driver available at boot time.
