This is weird... There is no any problem for me to running unsquashfs on 
my Linux system:
$ sudo unsquashfs /mnt/live/filesystem.squashfs
Parallel unsquashfs: Using 8 processors
18704 inodes (18664 blocks) to write

[===========================================================-] 
18664/18664 100%
created 15756 files
created 2600 directories
created 2876 symlinks
created 38 devices
created 1 fifos

$ unsquashfs -v
unsquashfs version 4.2 (2011/02/28)

Which version of unsquashfs did you use?
