Thanks Robert, as per usual, the minute I post to a mailing list, I solve the problem. The problem is Windows - as long as I ensure that only one disk is in the PC when Windows is running, there is no problem. If you boot Windows with both disks resident, Windows does something to drive D which makes it no longer an exact copy. So when the system shuts down after cloning, I remove the second drive and put it in the cupboard until I need to restore it.
