Hello Looking at the clonezilla "source" I don't see any obvious way to build it. Has anybody outside NCHC managed to build clonezilla from that? GPL requires that the source includes scripts used to drive the build. If the source does not suffice for building a working copy of the work without inside knowledge known only to the author it probably does not constitute a source by GPL definition. http://gpl-violations.org/faq/sourcecode-faq.html Regards Michal |

Did you read the programs of Clonezilla? They are all shell scripts or perl programs, you do not need to compile them. The running programs are source codes. This is described here: http://clonezilla.org/download/sourceforge/src/ If you mean to build Clonezilla live, check this: http://drbl.org/faq/fine-print.php?path=./2_System/46_create_clonezilla_live_from_scratch.faq#46_create_clonezilla_live_from_scratch.faq Steven. It raises some questions, though. First, why is this guide located around half of a FAQ page which contains over 100 entries between # Is there any way I can save image to CD-RW or DVD-RW directly ? # Is that possible I can put clonezilla live in my harddrive which already has an OS installed ? and # When I use Clonezilla server edition to do a multicast clone, the client machines just keep waiting, any hint ? # I'd like to translate DRBL/Clonezilla to other language, how can I help ? Some organization of the FAQ would be helpful. The word build which is usually associated with obtaining a useful program image from the sources only appears in # How to Build and Install Partclone on Fedora 11 x86_64? The word source appears in # Where can I find the DRBL live or Clonezilla live source codes ? which is nowhere near the # How to create Clonezilla live from scratch ? Also the page is styled such that the text is very hard to read (because the background color is set but link color is not and the link color from my system theme is hard to read on your white background). Further the FAQ is not searchable by content because the answers are only revealed once a question is clicked. I could possibly find my answer by page search if the answers were available because the answer provides many useful keywords although the question does not. Hint: many FAQ pages are organized such that they are divided into multiple sections of related questions and they have all the questions listed on the top with answers coming after that and there are in-page hyperlinks form the top list to the answers. Another question is since clonezilla live is self-hosted what purpose is that "source" published as separate tarball? Can clonezilla be also built from that source or is it a red herring? Thanks Michal |

I have updated now, and put a link here: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/#make Or you can directly find the doc here: http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/create_clonezilla_live_from_scratch.php > It raises some questions, though. > > First, why is this guide located around half of a FAQ page which > contains over 100 entries between > > # Is there any way I can save image to CD-RW or DVD-RW directly ? > # Is that possible I can put clonezilla live in my harddrive which > already has an OS installed ? > > and > > # When I use Clonezilla server edition to do a multicast clone, the > client machines just keep waiting, any hint ? > # I'd like to translate DRBL/Clonezilla to other language, how can I help ? > > Some organization of the FAQ would be helpful. > > The word build which is usually associated with obtaining a useful > program image from the sources only appears in > > # How to Build and Install Partclone on Fedora 11 x86_64? > > The word source appears in > > # Where can I find the DRBL live or Clonezilla live source codes ? > > which is nowhere near the > > # How to create Clonezilla live from scratch ? > > Also the page is styled such that the text is very hard to read > (because the background color is set but link color is not and the > link color from my system theme is hard to read on your white > background). > > Further the FAQ is not searchable by content because the answers are > only revealed once a question is clicked. > I could possibly find my answer by page search if the answers were > available because the answer provides many useful keywords although > the question does not. > > Hint: many FAQ pages are organized such that they are divided into > multiple sections of related questions and they have all the questions > listed on the top with answers coming after that and there are in-page > hyperlinks form the top list to the answers. > > Yes, we have to sort the FAQ/Q&A... For the past few years, we just appended and appended... If you can, why not do something for us? Sort them and give us the best way to present them. > Another question is since clonezilla live is self-hosted what purpose > is that "source" published as separate tarball? > Well, basically the "clonezilla" program can be run on other GNU/Linux distributions, e.g. Fedora, CentOS, OpenSuSE... I knew someone put Clonezilla program on Fedora live or other live linux and has his/her own Clonezilla live based on other GNU/Linux distribution. > Can clonezilla be also built from that source or is it a red herring? > Well, you can treat Clonezilla live as a GNU/Linux distribution, and as described on http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/create_clonezilla_live_from_scratch.php the Clonezilla live can be created from Clonezilla source program... Therefore they are related... Like a bootable > USB drive large enough to have an uncompressed filesystem? > For me the debian-live config is quite handy testing platform. On a decent system running the mksquashfs for something the size of clonezilla does not take very long. Also running mksquashfs is only required for changes to initscripts, other scripts can be modified directly from the live system and the diffs saved on an USB stick or on network and applied by live-helper on subsequent rebuilds. Changes to initramfs require only running mkinitramfs which is also not too lenghty, especially if you don't need something like mdadm installed. debian-live allows booting from network so you can serve the initramfs and squashfs image from the build directory without the need to build an iso image or burn CDs.
