#27 LVM not recognized at all

This weekend I tried to take an image of our SuSE Linux Enterprise Server, which holdes a XEN Hypervisor (x86-64) on a Raid1 and three virtuell machines (each with a root and a data partition) on a Raid5 (both raids are Hardware raid on a LSI Controller, so this shouldn't matter).
Takeing an image of the hypervisor went fine, but the LVM VM wasn't detected at all, Clonezilla didn't even recognized a partition table, altough lvdisplay shows all partitions.
I tried cloneing partition -> image which didn't even let me choice sdb (the Raid5) and device -> image which showed me a message "no input device", (I guess because there was no partition table. Maybe the last one is an other bug?)

System Details:
(ibikus-x is the hypervisor)
Clonezilla live 1.2.2-31/clonezilla live 20091009 karmic/parted magic 4.5

(THX god it's LVM2 and not 1 :-)

All command were executed with SuSE, since this a production System, but the information are the same from Clonezilla..
Drop me a message if i missed some importend information.

Thanks for the bug report. RAID device is not well supported in Clonezilla. We will to improve this in the future.

    Steven.

    Hi Steven,

thx for your answer and u're welcome, it's my contibution to your good work :-)

    > RAID device is not well supported in Clonezilla.
As I wrote before: It's a Hardware Raid on a profesional SAS-Controller, no Software Raid and no Host/Fake Raid. In my understanding there is no need for the operating system to deal with it. It only sees a /dev/sdX like it was a single harddisk.
Since both Raids are attached on the same controller and clonezilla can work with the Raid1 (/dev/sda) it also should work with the Raid5 (/dev/sdb). So I'm quite sure this problem is about LVM.
Maybe there is a way to find out?

    Greetings

If you are sure the problem is on LVM, maybe it's better to configure a virtual machine, then put the same LVM configuration on that machine. Try to use Clonezilla to see if the same problem exists or not. If it does, please share the virtual machine image file then I can test it here.

    Steven.

I'll try to get some ressources for this!
Which VM do you prefer? Is VirtualBox okay for you?
Do you have some tips or adivces to "clone" the LVM config?

    Thx

Virtiual box image is OK. Vmware is, too.

Sorry, didn't manage to create a virtual machine for you.
But I have some new information: It's a LVM2 which is used as xen virtual device (/dev/xvda).
Since we're going to shutdown the server this weekend for maintanance i'll test the newest clonezilla live alternative testing. For the case it's still not working:
Which information do you need to track the problem?

    Greetings

OK, the problem is on the disk name is /dev/xvda, so far Clonezilla only search for /dev/[hs]d[a-z], and LVM....
So we need a general device name search in the future.

    Steven.

Okay, I'm very glad you found the reason for this behaviour. But is there any quick (and dirty) workaround for me? Maybe creating a link or editing the search script? I'll shut down the server in 2 hours and avoiding dd would be very nice...

Thx for your help and keep up the good work ^_^

You can try to use partclone or fsarchiver command in clonezilla live to deal with the disk/partition by yourself.

    I hadn't any xvdX devices with clonezilla-live-20100420-lucid.
Probably a XEN Kernel is needed.
