I've been trying unsuccessfully to clone a Win10 500Gb SSD to a HDD. I've tried Clonezilla, Macrium, and some other cloning utility(?) on two different Win10 computers without success. I've checked the HDD with several utilities. The drive tests have all given me a green light on a low mileage Toshiba 500Gb HDD. The cloning software goes through all the appropriate stuff, telling me that the drive has been successfully cloned, but the cloned drive will not boot. The computer runs through the POST, then hangs on a black screen with a blinking cursor. I've tried this a number of times with either the black screen or it hangs with the message "cannot locate an OS." It doesn't seem that the boot sector is being written (or something??) When I try to look at the drive in Windows explorer, the drive is not recognized until I manually mount the drive.

If Clonezilla or Partclone has cloned your Windows successfully, then the issue seems to be related to the cloned OS. If the hardware is different, then you might need to add the driver to the cloned Windows for your hardware.

Thanks for that info. True, it is different hardware and that may be an issue. I have since my prior failed attempts to clone directly from drive to drive, successfully created an image and cloned that to a drive. Hooray!! Two steps instead of one, but it worked.

I'm using Partclone v0.3.23 if that makes any difference. Are there log files somewhere that I can post here?

So your issue is gone with the image saving and restoring?
Steven
Yes, I suppose it is.
OK, great. It's nice to know you have made it.
