According to https://clonezilla.org/show-live-doc-content.php?topic=clonezilla-live/doc/03_Disk_to_disk_clone, I can't clone a boot disk and then reboot the machine without taking out the clone. Is there a recipe or "plugin" that gets around that? Guessing no, but asking never hurts.

You can not? Why would you keep duplicated systems in the same machine? That definitely will confuse your OS.
