Is there any option for saving space when imaging/cloning with Clonezilla? I have used Clonezilla and seems very promising. However, it requires as much space as my original drive although the machine has a fresh install of ubuntu. Any ideas?

Make a backup of your important data just in case.
Then with 'gparted live' you can shift the partitions and sizes of your disks.
If there are any data or programs in it then that can take some time.
'gparted' gives you additional information.
Or
you can use:
clonezilla savedisk (look for blkdev.list in the image)
gparted live for the new partition sizes
clonezilla restoredisk
That's all.

"it requires as much space as my original drive although the machine has a fresh install of ubuntu." -> If you save the disk as image, normally the image will be compressed as 1/3:
