I try in vain to restore an image of a windowsXP partition, (actually 2 images that I made in January 2014) on a Dell Precision T3400.
When the restoration is done directly on the Dell Precision T3400, no error message is displayed. but when I try to start the restored drive I get a black screen with a blinking cursor. Yet the cloning date I restored an image that worked!
The recovered disk contains the same number of file (and the same size used) as the target disk. The drive partition format are identical and bootable. mbr priori also identical (I tried to use bootrepair it makes no difference).
I do not know with what version of clonezilla I made to images, today restorations were made with Clonezilla 2.3.1-18-amd64 from a USB key with Multisystem. I also tried with the wily 20151012-amd64-version, but it crashes on this computer.
I made a new windowsXP installation on the Dell Precision T3400. Then I'm cloning test from an older computer dell precison 370. Clonezilla 2.3.1-18-i586 with the same symptoms, with Clonezilla 20151012 wily-i386 the restored drive starts normally!
Currently I continue my new resettlement: | But I will like to understand what is happening because I have some images systems of other computers and I would like to continue to make system disk image without wondering whether they will run the day I need them.
If someone an idea?
Marc.

I continued my investigations, here are the results:
All tests were done with a Windows XP system.
Clonezilla run from a USB key with MultiSystem :
No version of Clonezilla has permi to restore my image 2014.
among all versions only tried to Clonezilla_live_20130314_quantal_i386 managed to make a image, to restore and restored drive can start.
Some version crashes at start, it's fails to the graphics menu, so the test ends.
the other seems to start correctly or start with Bug, for example: no language choice. but what is serious is that it allows to make an image and after restoration I realize that the restored drive can not start!
Clonezilla executed from a CD :
among all tried versions Clonezilla_live_20130314_quantal_i386 only managed to restore my image of 2014 and the restored drive can start.
All versions allow for a test image and restore, this restoration can start. Furthermore it is possible to restore an image made by a different version and restored drive can start (I have tested with versions of equivalent or greater dates).
My conclusion :
Clonezilla is incompatible with a USB key under MultiSystem. To avoid absolutely!
On the site of Clonezilla I have not found to comment on that, it is worth perhaps be the blow to warn against the creation of image that will not work the day we need to!
Marc.

"Clonezilla is incompatible with a USB key under MultiSystem. To avoid absolutely!" -> What did you mean by "MultiSystem"? Did you mean this: https://sourceforge.net/projects/multisystem/ ?
If so, we recommend you to use tuxboot. A lot of people, including us, have use USB flash drive for Clonezilla live all the time. Nowadays most of the people use USB flash drive instead of CD. If USB flash drive is an issue, a lot of people will report.
Steven

Steven.
