All I want to do is replace a 60 GB hard disk that seems to be failing with a new 60 GB hard disk (using XP on a laptop).
I'm confused by information overload here. I have a 500 GB external hard drive that I could use to place the image of my HD, but unless I read incorrectly, that HD would have to have my OS on it. That is, I would have to get the OS on the external HD so as to boot from it. Is this wrong?
What is the simple route to replace my hard disk?
Thanks.

You can prepare a CD or USB with Clonezilla live on it, then boot it. Follow the doc you should be able to do that.
//NOTE// Backup important data before you use Clonezilla. Just in case.
