Hello,
I've been using Clonezilla with much success for years. We recently got some new MS Surface Pro 7's and as usuall I loaded the OS (Win10) from scratch, configured it to our standards, sysprepped it, and then planned on making the image with Clonezilla.
Unfortunately, the latest stable version (2.6.4-10) won't fully boot Clonezilla. I get error "Get PTE Read access is not set."
So then I tried the latest alternate build (20191024) and I got some error about TPM.
I don't think this has anything to do with it, but I'm using a Dell D6000 dock. I'll disconnect the dock and see if Clonezilla loads, but I need to the dock as it is serving the NIC.
Any suggestions on how I can get Clonezilla to boot on this Surface Pro 7?
Thanks,
Doug

This is related to the Linux kernel from Clonezilla live. Maybe you can give testing Clonezilla live a try, e.g., 2.6.5-1 or 20191120-focal. They come with newer Linux kernel so your hardware might be support.

Thanks Steven... I tried 2.6.5-1 Testing and it didn't work. I didn't see any error message. After the first screen where you select the 800x600, the screen went blank/black. I let it sit there for a couple minutes and nothing ever happened. I will try the 20191120-focal now.

I think I need to run a boot command of modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci. How do I do that with Clonezilla. I saw where I can press "e" at the opening screen and then I see the boot script items. I'm not sure exactly where to place modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci and then once I do, what do I press to continue on? I see something at the bottom of the screen, but I can't read it because it is covered up by part of the Clonezilla logo/words.

OK, I finally got it to work by adding the modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci to the boot parameters. I was originally adding it in the wrong place. Then I found ctrl-x is what I press to continue on once I have put it in as a paremeter.
I'm curious if it will always be this way or eventually a new version will be compatible without having to mess with the boot parameters.

I believe there are instructions on clonezilla.org on how to modify the
kernel and reburn the ISO. Otherwise google “modify kernel boot parameters
and rebuild iso“ for howtos. It is not hard nor all that time consuming
especially if you use Linux to do so.
I too received a whole bunch of SP7s and in following all the information above, I am still unable to get passed the Clonezilla Live selection. After selection, just hangs on Clonezilla splash screen. Did you also run into this issue and how were you able to get around it?

Although I wonder if you let it sit long enough, then you will get the same error I got. In which case you would need to change the boot parameter with the info above. Check my screenshot I posted.
I'm surprised this hasn't been addressed yet in the latest versions.

Hi - i'm having an issue restoring a clonezilla image to our surface pro 7. We're using simple USB thumb drive as a boot as well as external USB storage for the images. We keep getting bluescreens so I believe I'm narrorwing this down to a win10pro v1909 update?? Has anybody seen this behavior?

MS Surface Pro 7: Stable and Alternate Won't Fully Load

I can confirm disconnecting the Dell D6000 dock made no difference with the latest stable version 2.6.4-10. I still get the PTE error.
If I try fail safe mode, I get the error "mce: Unable to init MCE device (rc: -5)"
I went back and tried 2.6.1-25 stable and I get yet a different error... "hw perf events fixed 4 > max(3), clipping!"
Tried 2.6.4-12 testing as well. Same error "PTE Read access is not set"
This is related to the Linux kernel from Clonezilla live. Maybe you can give testing Clonezilla live a try, e.g., 2.6.5-1 or 20191120-focal. They come with newer Linux kernel so your hardware might be support.

No go on the 20191120-Focal build. This one gets a tpm chip error.
Same with 20191120-Eoan... error communicating with TPM chip.

Well, even though I got it to boot with adding modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci, it doesn't see the network card using the dell d6000 dock.
OK, looks like I'm good to go. I'm using a startech usb hub with an adapter and now it sees the nic.
So it still takes adding modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci to the boot parameters and also using the usb hub instead of the dock for the nic.
I'm hopefull we will eventually not have to add the boot parameter.
Thanks,
Doug
Hey Doug, where in the cfg file do you add the modprobe line? Thank you in advance
The ‘modprobe.blacklist=intel_lpss_pci’ needs inserted towards the end (right) of the longest line just after radeonhd.blacklist=yes
It might work if you insert it in other areas, but I found it to work here, so I'm running with it. Attached image so you can see it.
Doug
Perfect! Thank you so much!

Thanks for your feedback. Yes, once the newer Linux kernel can support your hardware, the blacklist boot parameter won't be needed I believe.

No, I didn't have the issue with it hanging on the splash screen.

Thank you. The latest live version worked out of the box without change to the boot parameter.
