I just found out that exfat partitions do work with clonezilla home image save locations. The windows format did not work though. I had to use USB STORAGE FORMAT TOOL 5.0 since HP usb format does not do exfat.
The speeds for saving images in exfat are faster in clonezilla than ntfs. I get around 2.96gb/min in exfat and 2.5gb/min in ntfs.
I was hoping to get faster usb 3.0 speeds with clonezilla but I guess 40 - 50mb/sec is ok.

If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
does clonezilla support usb 3.0 speeds?
also does clonezilla allow saving images to an exfat home partition?
Look for
256gb usb 3.0 flash drive not detected by current clonezilla
Yes I wrote that thread.

Just a note for any one reading this
The new USB STORAGE FORMAT 5.1 or higher does not work
The old USB Disk Storage Format Tool 5.0 still works fine.
be careful where you download from. I get mine from download dot com
Backup to exFAT definitely works, I used 4Tb external drive without any glitch.
I don't about USB 3.0 speeds, but during my last run it showed about 8.3 GB/min which corresponds to 138 MB/s which seems avg 3.0 speed.
