been trying to use clonezilla to move a windows 7 partition to a larger drive and getting the topic title message after completing.

i'm on a mac pro running bootcamp in snow leopard (osx 10.6.6). i used mac-specific tools to clone the osx partition without issue. then created a new bootcamp partition and used clonezilla to image the original w7 partition and restore it to the new bootcamp partition.

everything appeared to have worked, when i boot into the mac side i can open the bootcamp partition and see that my windows installation appears to have all been cloned. when i reboot and try to get into windows, though, the boot hangs, leaving just a blinking cursor in the upper left of an otherwise black screen.

it would appear that the message: 'ntfs boot partition not found' is accurate. what do i do to fix this? what did i miss in the cloning operation?

i tried a previous time and got a windows error that 'bootmgr is missing.' spent hours searching and reading, re-imaging, and restoring but nothing worked.

i've done this before with other tools and it worked. that was long enough ago that the tools are no longer maintained and are out of date, even for w7.

    thanks for any help,
    BabaG

With windows7 don't forget the windows7 hidden partition sda1 or sda2 depended on the PC. The third partition (e.g. sda3) should be for your data. The partitions should be equal or greater than before. You can it make with 'gparted live' too.
In your case make saveparts/restoreparts for sda1 and sda2.
    That's all.

thanks, Fuchs. think i found the solution. it only required cloning the one partition.

one of the things i'd been doing was trying clonezilla and comparing with an older version of winclone (v2.3.3). winclone reported errors after cloning. the interface for winclone is easier to decypher, though, as it's gui and run from the mac side of things. that's probably why i took particular notice of the reported errors. clonezilla just has lots of text run out the top of my screen where i don't know how to access it.

in pursuing the notion that the errors might not be software based (clonezilla) but problems with the windows side of things, i booted into windows and tried some repairs. after that winclone was able to clone successfully and without reporting any errors.

i followed up the successful winclone cloning by retesting clonezilla. this time, with the windows system having been repaired before the attempt, clonezilla was also successful.

i hadn't seen repairing the windows partition before cloning mentioned in any of the guides i'd looked at so i wanted to report it here so others might have access to the info. very glad to see an open project like this succeed.

if i have any suggestions out of this whole episode, it would be a request for clearer error reporting in the cloning process. like i said, i barely noticed anything in my attempts before i tried winclone. the second thing would be more thorough guides but that might not necessarily be under the purview of the clonezilla project.

    thanks again,
    BabaG
