    Mike Miller - 2011-01-04

Okay, I really hope someone can help me (and that I actually get responses, which I do not over at FOG). I was initially using FOG, I'll admit; which was honestly working well, but then after I returned from Christmas holiday, things all started going haywire and I could never fix it.

I am halfway through a 50 laptop deployment. They are all identical PC's - Dell Vostro V13 (which, aside from the massive cloning issues I am having is a decent 3G laptop actually).

Anyhow, after nearly throwing my FOG into the fog, I moved over to trying Clonezilla, hopeful it would get me out of this bind. I have a deadline of this Friday for all to be finished.

These Laptops do not have a CD drive, so I created a Live USB using the Tuxboot utility. I plugged it in, was amazed at how easy the menus were, chose SAMBA server, which is setup on our Server 2008 server, input the info for the login, and away my first image went.

All went flawlessly, or so it seemed. The image uploaded fully and quickly might I add. At this point, I simply used the beginner options.

The problems started well into the imaging of another Vostro V13.

These are split up (apparently) into 3 partitions, the first is very small, the second is about 15 gb, and the third has about 245 gb of free space, but only about 30 gb of actual data.

So it goes through parts 1 and 2 very quickly and there are no errors. Then it starts in on partition 3. It get anywhere between 8% and 65% and then all of a sudden shoots up a message that states the following:

"read CRC error: no such file or directory, please check your image file"

Now, just below it, I get some error text that is harder to decipher because some of it is cut off for whatever reason - I will type what I see:

    cat: /home/partimag/windows7-homeprem-img/sda3.nt
g.gz.ac: Host is down:VFS send error in read = -11
CIFS VFS: UNexpected lookup error -112
    cat:  /home/partimag/windows-7-homeprem-img/sda3.ntfs-ptc1-img.gz.ad: Host is down
    pigz abort
d input - invalid deflate data: (stdin).

I realize that some of this is not complete, but this is how I see it.

I think that the last couple of errors are cascaded due to the first perhaps.

So, I made a new image again, try to re-deploy and the same thing happened again. 3 times, with 2 different sets of laptops.

So, I was reading and decided that perhaps it is the compression that was causing the problem. So, I created a new image under the advanced options using the no compression option.

Again, it uploaded perfectly fine, download - more errors in the same manner as above, but the error stated the following:

    Restoring NTFS from image…
CIFS VFS: No response to cmd 46 mid 29836
CIFS VFS: Send error in read = -11
    cat: /home/partimg/WHP-7-try-2-img/sda2.ntfs-img.aa: Host is down.

I really need to find a solution, but have searched and cannot find anything related to this issue. I have a feeling it is something simple, but hidden perhaps. I really hope someone can help! Thanks.

Look like it's the network connection issue. Maybe you can check the network quality, especially the hardware, like the network cable or something similar.
Or if you can, try to use ssh server instead of Samba server… By doing this, we can isolate the problem, to see if the problem is on the hardware, or the software.

Thanks for the response. Yeah, I was thinking about moving to SSH server to see if that has anything to do with it. Although, I cannot rightly say I have ever used an SSH server before, but I am sure I can figure it out. I do have both Linux and MS options for storage.

I checked all network connections in the loop, including switches, and all checks out. The one thing I did do for the time being is to disable power saving on the "green" managed switches and added highest QoS priority to all ports involved. I attempted to use the SSH connection - ubuntu 10.10 is setup running openSSH. However, I am getting an error about /home/partimag not being a mount point or something.

Being that I am unfamiliar, I am unsure what I need to do on the Ubuntu (server) end to allow this connection. I am assuming that all that is really required is that the directory exists, has write and read permissions, and that I have a user than can connect, right? Meaning, I do not have to actually "share" the folder on Ubuntu if I am connecting via SSH, correct?

". I am assuming that all that is really required is that the directory exists, has write and read permissions, and that I have a user than can connect, right? Meaning, I do not have to actually "share" the folder on Ubuntu if I am connecting via SSH, correct? " -> Correct. If you can ssh login that account, and you have permission to write files in the directory, then it will work.

You are right. It was very easy. It wasn't lying to me either. I left out one directory in the path so what I was trying to use really did not exist!

I set it to upload before I left the office so I will not know until the morning whether or not it worked properly. However, I am sure that it did because it wasn't the uploading of the image that is the problem. It is the imaging of the new machine that has given me fits this entire time. (with both FOG and Clonezilla).

Okay, so the SSH server solves the HOST is down problem. However, like with FOG, I can easily upload and create the image using Clonezilla and save it on the SSH server. However, no matter what I do, it hangs when deploying to another computer that is the same exact hardware setup (100% same Laptop new out of box).

I thought perhaps it was the 3 partition setup if you just install windows 7 default. However, I tried installing so that it was simply on one partition and I am still having the issues. I am so frustrated at this point I am not sure what to do!

    I get no errors whatsoever.

"it hangs when deploying to another computer" -> Could you please show us more about this?
More lines shown on the screen that right before what you mentioned "it hangs"…

    Steven.
