Hi!
I have mannaged to get CZ working on a number of different media (USB flash, network, CD) But i am having masses of trouble installing it to work on a usb external hard disk.
First thing is I cant get it to boot. I can get it to boot into doss (using the HP usb drive tool) but thats all.
If it was usable in the windows environment, i would install XP on the external disk, remove the windows shell and replace it with the program i wanted to boot to (among other things but basicly thats what i would do.).
I dont know my way around Linux very well, so can someone please help.
Thanks loads

I work in a windows environment at the moment. I have about 100- 150 computers that have xp pro installed, to look after.
have a 250GB western didgital external hard disk to clone and restore the users machines and would like to be able to plug it in and boot to it.
as i have said, i can get it to work on a usb pen drive, but this is not large enough for the images. But am having no luck doing the same with a usb hard disk.
I hope this makes what im trying to do more clear.
thanks for the reply.

I am trying to make a portable ghosting device. I have a 250Gb USB external hard disk and want to install clonezilla onto it.
I would like to be able to plug the USB drive into a computer and turn it on, set it to boot from the USB drive and load up clonezilla. Once in clonezilla I can the save or restore the computer's internal hard disk.
This saves me having to bring the PC(s) back to the office to clean up - I just carry the portable USB drive around with me.

Could you please describe it in more details ? Such as the steps you did, and where was the problem ? Without detail steps, it's not easy for others to help you.

I have the same problem.
I want to clone my SuSe Pc booting from an external usb harddrive.
I managed to boot from an USB Pendrive with Clonezilla. (DRBLLive Helper
works just fine but my USB Harddrive will not be recognized under Windows as a Pendrive thatswhy I couldn't use)
I tried syslinux too but it works also just with a Pendrive. I got the message
"Operating system missing"
So, the question is:
How to install Clonezilla to an external HD? In that case I wouldn't need
two devices for cloning.
Thank for any Help!

Not sure what exactly you need. You'd better to explain what you want in details so that other can help you.
Ok here goes.

or to put it another way.

Basically to put Clonezilla on a usb external drive is the same thing as you did for your USB flash disk.

What problem did you encounter ? Any messages ?
Thanks for the reply.
first of all, I cant set it up as you would a USB key. the DRBL does not see the USB hard drive as it appears as a local disk.
Could you please describe it in more details ? Such as the steps you did, and where was the problem ? Without detail steps, it's not easy for others to help you.

Did you try to use grub to do that ? It's something like:
/opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-live-dev -s -d /dev/sdax --boot-loader grub
For more info, please run:
/opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-live-dev --help
Good luck.
