Hi, I've been at this for hours now, so someone please confirm or deny that I have any clue what I'm doing, and help me understand the -icds option in the Advanced settings of CloneZilla. I am trying to copy 640GB worth of a CloneZilla backup from a 750GB hard drive to a new 640GB hard drive.
Ok, so 6 months ago I installed a triple boot setup on my computer, including Windows XP, Windows 7, and Ubuntu 12.04LTS. A total of 4 partitions (one per OS + Linux-Swap).
That was a nightmare, but I got it done. I then decided I HAD to have a solid bit-for-bit backup, so I used CloneZilla to do an entire disk copy from my 640GB drive to a 750GB drive just for that purpose. So, I have a 640GB file-system/total partitions on my 750GB drive.
Well, last week my 640GB drive failed, but it's under warranty, so I got a free replacement, and I'm trying to copy my 750GB backup back onto my NEW 640GB drive.
Since I am now trying to copy to a smaller disk, CloneZilla failed in Basic mode.
After many hrs. trying different things tonight, I stumbled upon some info. online, and I decided to use CloneZilla in Advanced mode, checking the option for -icds, but leaving all other settings default. It is cloning from my 750GB drive now, to my new 640GB drive, and will be done in a few hrs. Will it fail? Did I do the right thing?
But more importantly, when can I use -icds, and when should I not?
Here are the resources I found most useful in figuring this out:
1) http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/02_Restore_disk_image/advanced/09-advanced-param.php
-however, it says at the bottom,
"If you are sure all the data from the image could fit the smaller disk, i.e. it won't be written to the wrong disk space, you can check the option "-icds".Warning! To select this option, you have to know what you are doing!."
--and I certainly am NOT in the category of those who really know what I'm doing, when it comes to using CloneZilla in any type of Advanced mode.
"checking the option for -icds, but leaving all other settings default. It is cloning from my 750GB drive now, to my new 640GB drive, and will be done in a few hrs. Will it fail? Did I do the right thing? " -> It's hard to tell because we have no idea about your data blocks on your harddrive.
Anyway, firstly backup your image, then since your 640 GB is new, so you can just try to restore the image with "-icds" option. Nothing you will lose. Then we will see if it works or not. I hope it has worked there...
