    Francesco - 2012-11-22

Hi, I have been using Clonezilla for a couple of years and everything was fine, but now I'm getting stuck trying to make an image of a new Windows 8 tablet device, the specs are:

    Samsung Ativ Smart PC
Product code: 500T Notebook model XE500T1C
    Processor: Intel Atom Z2760 @ 1.80GHz
    O.S. Windows 8
    RAM: 2GB
    SSD: 64GB

I have tried to use the latest versions: 1.2.12-67, 2.0.0.37, 20120620-precise and 20121108 quantal; using them all (from ISO) I got the same error during the Clonezilla boot. The message is "can't find command 'load_video'", after the error I can see the first Clonezilla page but after few seconds everything becomes blank. I have also tried to press Tab key during the boot process, by doing this I got the same error during the boot but I also can see the boot options of the first page of Clonezilla, unfortunately by selecting every single choice from the menu I got the same behaviour.

Did anyone have already solved this kind of error or did anyone already succeed making an image of this device? Please help.

Have you made a start with Clonzilla live in Failsave mode ?

  • Francesco

    Francesco - 2012-11-23

Yes, I have tried also to start in Failsafe mode, the result is still the same, the CD is spinning for few seconds and then all is blocked, I have only to switch off using the power button.

    Have you made a memorytest (Memtest86+) ?
Have you set an other VGA mode ?
Could you start clonezilla live from memory stick or sd card ?
Have you any other versions of geparted or clonzilla on your notebook harddrive SSD 64GB ?

    How about Clonezilla live 20121130-raring?

    Steven.

Sorry for my late answers, now I had the possibility to test….

    Answer to steven:
    - I have tried the new version (raring) both from CD and USB, unfortunately with same results.

    Answer to fusi1939:
    1) I am not able to run the ISO and the USB version of Memtest86+ on this tablet (I think due to EUFI bios)
    2) Yes, I have tried all the VGA modes with the same result, all is blocked
    3) The new version 20121130-raring is starting also from USB (the previous versions not) but the results are the same
    4) I have tried with all versions of Clonezilla (stable or test) with same behaviour

Thanks for your help, I will keep trying….

Have you made your clonzilla live 20121130-raring bootable direct
    with
    /utils/win32/makeboot.bat
    or
    /utils/linux (sudo bash makeboot.sh /dev/sdb1(?) )
(not with unetbootin, not with tuxboot) ?

Have you made your tablet pc to a  'notebook pc', without touch buttons ?
    I think yes.

Then I would start clonzilla without clonzilla background picture 'ocswp.png'.
For that make in the directory /syslinux  a change
    'ocswp.png' -> '_ocswp.png' .

Now you can see an other, identical menu, not in graphic mode.
    Try it.

Hello, I have made several other tests, see below:

    - I have tested also new versions:
    clonezilla-live-20121209-raring
    clonezilla-live-20121209-quantal
    clonezilla-live-2.0.1-12-i486
All of them installed using Tuxboot.

    - With the tablet I am using the keyboard so that I can use it like a notebook.

    - I have removed the .png file from the EFI/boot folder (the other folders had no effect) and I can see a not grphic menu, but unfortunately I have the same behaviour, after a selection everything is blocked (with all the new versions).

    Thanks…

Do you know any version of GNU/Linux distribution works on that machine?

    Steven.

    Hi
Did you ever resolve this? I am having an identical problem with a Samung ATIV 500T.
I've tried pretty much the same things as yourself, the only thing I have to add is it works fine on an ATIV 700T which suggests the issue might be processor based as the 700T uses an I5 processor.

    Thanks - Gordon

Hi, unfortunately I have not yet solved the issue on Samsung Ativ 500T, but I can tell you that now I have the same problem on a HP Elitepad 900 that also uses Intel Atom Z2760.
I am thinking that the issue depends by the EFI Bios (Secureboot).
I have not the possibility to try a Linux distribution on this pc.

Is that possible you can disable the secureboot in the BIOS temporarily?

    Steven.

  • Francesco

    Francesco - 2013-01-04

On Samsung the feature is already disabled, only in this case I can see the Clonezilla USB media, but after the boot I have the behaviour already described (with Secureboot enabled the only bootable device is the internal disk).
On HP tablet there is no possibility to disable the Secureboot feature.

Could you please try clonezilla-live-2.1.0-2-i486, and take a video for the booting process, then post the video?

    Steven.

Look at the point 7 .
Do not use tuxboot (!), do not use netbootin. There are the same errors in it. (Assumed with grep '..$' for memory).
    Take a .zip file !

    Details:
Take a 2GB SD card  , new formated with NTFS .
    Download among
      Browse All Files (!)
    clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae.zip
    All extract..
    go to folder 'clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae'
mark all extracted files and folders in it
    Send to .. USB_SD_card

    Go to USB_SD_card
    G:\utils\win32\makeboot.bat  start with open

    That's all.

    Tested with
    ASUS EeePC 1015PN Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N570  1,66 GHz
    too.

Thanks Fusi1939, I have tried exactly as you described (version, method etc…) but I got the same error.
Thanks Steven I am getting organized to make a video and post it…

Now I have seen in the Ativ eManual there is no way in the BIOS to disable Hyper Threading for
    Intel® SGX545 Graphics Media Accelerator .

All of that it was a start problem.
In clonezilla you can go in

syslinux/sysconfig.cfg  in the fourth line and change
      #default vesamenu.c32
      default menu.c32

It's a textmode, not a graphic mode for the menu,
without a first start of the Graphics Media Accelerator.
Then start clonezilla in other/Save mode (!).

    BTW
    Thanks Gordon.

    Hi,
I have tried the suggested changes to sysconfig.cfg file disabling Graphics Media mode, unfortunately nothing changed. The link below contains the video of the boot process taken using a Samsung Ativ and a "clonezilla-live-2.1.0-2-i486" usb key created manually and with the .cfg edited as suggested by fusi1939.

Thanks for your support, I hope that sooner or later I can clone this tablet….

From the video I can not tell that.
I wish I have such a device that I can try. It would be easier for me to know what's wrong.
Anyway, thanks for reporting the issue.

    Steven.

    Thanks Steven,
I am wondering if anyone succeeded in cloning any Intel Atom Z2760 Windows 8 tablet using Clonezilla….

I haven't sold this yet but I think I got a step closer!

I've been trying to back up an HP Elitepad 900, trying to edit the "syslinux/sysconfig.cfg" as above and wondering why nothing I did made any difference whatsoever.
It turns out it is using the menu in "/efi/boot/grub.cfg"

I don't know  much about grub or booting linux kernels but at least I can make it fail with different error messages!

I will keep trying but perhaps some of you finer minds can solve this faster than me.

    Regards

    Gordon

    Hi
I've done a lot more research/googling this problem and I think for the time being this is not going to run  on this processor.
Liliputing have a good article about this processor.

    http://liliputing.com/2012/09/dozens-of-windows-8-tablets-with-intel-clover-trail-chips-on-the-wya.html

    The crux of this is
<snip>Unfortunately the graphics core in the Z2760 processor is a PowerVR core design licensed from Imagination Technologies. That means Intel wouldn’t have the rights to distribute source code for Clover Trail graphics even if the company wanted to… and Imagination hasn’t been very forthcoming with source code in the past.</snip>

If anyone gets around this please let me know.

    Regards

    Gordon

'It turns out it is using the menu in "/efi/boot/grub.cfg"' -> So apparently it uses uEFI/GPT, not BIOS/MBR. Therefore syslinux/syslinux.cfg won't be used.

    Anyway, thanks for sharing that.
    Steven.
