Cloned Ubuntu system drive not booting

Greetings all
i have an Ubuntu 20 server. i have just successfully upgraded all of the storage drives. the problem is with the system drive. i cloned the drive to it's replacement. clonezilla reports success. however when i try to boot the new drive (old drive removed). i get a kernel panic. first it's/sbin/init error losing started libraries and at the end kernel panic not syncing. any thoughts on what i might have done eating? any help is appreciated
