Thanks for interest but I will be unable to copy the screen for following reason.
I downloaded the latest version of clonezilla and tried again, both partitions saved without any reports but restoring gave exactly the same error message.
Tried partimage instead, this has saved the NTFS partitions and restored without any error messages but neither will boot, all the files appear to be there so suspect it is a boot sector problem.
Reason I cannot take a screen copy is I have used all 4 primary partitions, One working XP, Two non booting XPs and one extended partition containing a working Ubuntu.

If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:

We need the output error messages on the screen… Is that something to do with your partitions? Or?

I saved two separate NTFS XP partitions to an extrenal USB hard drive.
Both images saved without any errors being reported.
I tried to restore the images to new NTFS partitions and each gave the following error,
Failed to restore partition image file /home/partimage/sys-img/hda2* to /dev/hda2. Maybe this image is corrupt.
It had previously reported 'Finished unicast restoring image sys-img to /dev/hda2
I do still have the original data.
Any suggestions appreciated.

When you see this error messages, is that possible you can take a photo about the whole screen and post it somewhere so we can see more info?
Thanks.
Steven.
