Hi,
I had an SSD drive installed in my old Sony Vaio laptop to make it faster.
There are two disks in it now: \
the regular disk, with two partitions, one with the operating system plus data (C)
and one with an image file of the C-drive (windows shows this as D).
I want to use clonezilla to put C on the SSD disk. The SSD disk is bigger than the C disk so
this should be no problem.
So now I have two options: clone the C-disk or use the image of the C-disk, that is located on the D-disk,
to create a clone on the SSD disk.
Actually one first question:
when Clonezilla puts on the screen something like:
Continue saving as an image file?
If we assume that I indicated the source and target correctly,
will this put the exact C-disk on the SSD disk?
This is not clear to me, save as an image = cloning?
(Oh I already formatted the SSD disk (NFTS).)
If I say yes to this can I then set the BIOS as to start up with the SSD drive?
Because that is my goal.
Another question: when booting the clonezilla usb-stick, there is an error message, something about RADEON. But in the end it says: load succesful (or something like that) and Clonezilla starts.
CLonezilla is a bit confusing because in the beginning it sees only two disks, the normal harddisk and the SSD. The normal harddisk is too big to clone on the SSD, but the C partition is not.
Because Clonezilla only showed the regular and SSD disks, and not the partitions of the regular disks (in the beginning) I created an image of the C partition of the regular disk.
Now I think that maybe that was not necessary.
I hope somebody can help me, thanks a lot in advance!

Hi Steven,
thank you for answering.
Unfortunately you misread my question, my C partition is SMALLER
than the SSD drive, so this is not a problem.
Oh you mean it is about the complete disk, not about the partition?
But what if I created an image file of the C-partition?
See the attachment with a clarifying screenshot of the situation.
It would be great if you could read the post again, it maybe there is no problem at all,
the main thing it comes down to is: if I save the C partition as an image with clonezilla,
to my ssd drive, will that mean that I can start the laptop from my ssd drive?
If you want to deal with drive C: only, you can use saveparts/restoreparts of Clonezilla to do that. However, you have to take care of the partition table on the destination disk and the boot manager by yourself. Just remember the destination partition must be equal or larger than the source one.
//NOTE// Backup important data before you use Clonezilla. Just in case.

Hi Steven,
Did you look at the picture attached?
I want to deal with the PARTITION C, which is SMALLER than the SSD-drive.
So are you saying I cannot simply create an image of the C partition, and copy it to the SSD-drive and then start the laptop from the SSD-drive?
Or it can be done but it requieres a high level of technical knowledge (which I do not have)?
Ok is there another software that can do this easier?
I really appreciate your help.
Is saving an image imply that if that image contains the OS, you can start the laptop from wherever you put that image?
best regards
Michiel

Your drive C: is about 40 GB, but you did not mention the size of your SSD disk. I am assuming it's bigger than 40 GB.
"I cannot simply create an image of the C partition, and copy it to the SSD-drive and then start the laptop from the SSD-drive?" -> No, you can. However, it only can clone the file system for you, by using restoreparts option in Clonezilla. Not the partition table, and boot loader...
"Or it can be done but it requieres a high level of technical knowledge" -> I am afraid so...
"Ok is there another software that can do this easier?" -> I believe there is. You can try to use some other proproetary software, just google to find them.

When you said C: disk, actually in GNU/Linux, it's a partition, like /dev/sda1. Hence this is still in the limitation of Clonezilla, larger disk to smaller one... Not well supported because...
