    Hi,

How much does Clonezilla compress the image?  If I have a 500GB HD that has used 250GB, then how big will my image need?  I am under the impression that you can save the image as an iso and burn it to a CD/DVD?  How does it compress 250GB of data to fit onto a CD?

    Thanks,
    Nic

    Hello Nic,

yes, Clonezilla compresses the images quite efficiently I'd say. The thing is that compression highly depends upon the type of data to process. Text data compression is very efficient while executable compression is not. Already compressed data like some images formats (png, jpg, tif) won't compress at all (here, compression will in fact add to the data size, because of the compressor internal dictionary).

Anyway, I'd say that compressing 250 GiB will never compress to a size compatible with a DVD (4.7 GiB): this is a 1 to 50 ratio. If you've got a spare hard disk, try saving to that, then create the ISO. You'll get the answer (the ISO size).
