    Luca Rossi - 2011-12-13

    Good morning people,
I'm trying to backup the disk from HP Blade BL460 G1 mounting RedHat x64 with the latest clonezilla version: clonezilla-live-1.2.11-23-amd64.iso

    Linux oitwi11 2.6.18-164.el5 #1 SMP Tue Aug 18 15:51:48 EDT 2009 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64
Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 (Tikanga)

I tried to sent the disk backup to a local USB disk. Unfortunately CloneZilla can't complete the backup with the following error (Btw, the /boot partition is saved OK):

when clonezilla starts to work on the LVM i get these errors (or something similar):

    Parsing LVM layout…
    Parsing logical volumes…
/opt/drbl/sbin/ocs-functions: line 2348: /home/partimag/redhat_test/lvm_vg_dev.list: no such file or directory

    Saving the VG config…
/home/partimag/redhat_test/lvm_vg_dev.list: no such file or directory
    done!

Yes, the error is also reported in my first post. It happens after a few seconds Clonezilla start the clone:

Well, just to be clear, this is not the error coming frm my machine, since I cannot copy and paste it. It coming from another clonezilla forum user with exactly the same arror I have (Btw, no solution provided so far….)

From the files list of your image, apparently the saving action failed. Your image is not complete. We haven't tested CCISS RAID card imaging for a long time since we do not have such a card for us to test here. Not sure if the codes are broken.

Does anyone on this forum have imaged CCISS RAID drive successfully?

    Steven.

Steven, I'll try to find another HP BL460C not in traffic and reproduce the same Disk configuration (even CCISS RAID) with exactly the same OS.
Do you eventually have any advice? Like use particular CLONEDISK version or something like this?

    Btw, thanks for reply!

Well, I'll make my next try tomorrow morning, but you've just confirmed what was I thinking.

I remembered right yesterday, that I had already backup succesfully another Blade BL460C machine with exactly the same smart array. And I should have used one of the latest releases (like: 1.2.9-19 or 1.2.10-14). So maybe the last one have again some problems with CCISS RAID.

I'll report my test result asap…….

Just for your information, all the BLADEs I have (included the succesfully backuped one) have the following smart array:

    # hpacucli
HP Array Configuration Utility CLI 8.28-13.0
    Detecting Controllers...Done.
Type "help" for a list of supported commands.
Type "exit" to close the console.

Well, this is the result from my last test.
First of all I used the following Clonezilla release:
    1.2.0-25
    1.2.9-19
    1.2.10-14
    1.2.11-23

All the release give me the same errors when try to backup the LVM partition. Please check the screenshot :
    http://i39.tinypic.com/izao06.png
As always, only the boot partition is backuped!!!!

What is not clear for me, is why partclone works??
I tried DISK 2 DISK cloning (destination is USB disk), and it works!!! It backup boot and LVM partitions as shown in the following screenshot:

    http://i42.tinypic.com/2611a8z.png

The only problem is the process will take a long time due to low USB rate!

Hope this can help to solve this issue!!

    Rgds
    Lucas

    Lucas,
"DISK 2 DISK cloning" for LVM in Clonezilla live is done by dd, not partclone. Therefore it takes very long.

Because I have no CCISS device here, is that possible I can remotely test the saving and restoring there? If so, please email me at "steven _at_ nchc org tw".
    Thanks.

    Steven.

    Luca Rossi - 2011-12-20

Steven, first of all thanks for your feedback.
Unfortunately these blades are in a closed network located in Rome and used by one of the biggest Italian telephone company.  Sorry but, for security reason, remote access is highly restricted to only a few people, and I cannot do nothing for that!

BTW, Is there any commands and/or actions I can do for you?

For now I found a workaround, just remove one Blade disk and put into a Proliant DL385 where clonezilla works (Smart Array P400). BTW, would be better to clone the disk in place, to be sure the data are preserved!

  • Steven Shiau

    Steven Shiau - 2011-12-21

Maybe the easiest is to try that for CentOS 5.
Is that possible you can reproduce this issue for CentOS 5?
If so, please tell me as details as possible (e.g. how you install that, the partition layout, the steps to save and restore…) so that I can reproduce it here.
    Thanks again.

    Steven.

    Luca Rossi - 2011-12-22

Well, this situation will drive me crazy…. sure!!!!

Two days ago I succesfully backup one Proliant DL385 G5 using CLONEZILLA 1.2.9.
Today I make another test to another Proliant DL385 G5 (SAME AS PREVIOUS ONE!!!). Then, backup fails with the same error reported for blade some post ago (uploaded screenshot)…..

The only difference between this system is the Smart Array revision:

    WORKS:

Smart Array P400 in Slot 1
       Bus Interface: PCI
       Slot: 1
       Serial Number: P61620F9VV896Z
       Cache Serial Number: PA2270H9VVA0HS
       RAID 6 (ADG) Status: Enabled
       Controller Status: OK
       Chassis Slot:
       Hardware Revision: Rev D
       Firmware Version: 4.06

    DOESN"T WORKS:

Smart Array P400 in Slot 1
       Bus Interface: PCI
       Slot: 1
       Serial Number: P61620H9VVV6MM
       Cache Serial Number: PA2270J9SW16ZU
       RAID 6 (ADG) Status: Enabled
       Controller Status: OK
       Chassis Slot:
       Hardware Revision: Rev E
       Firmware Version: 4.06

At this point, onestly I surrender!!!  :-( I'll use another method t oclone the disk…
Let me know if I can do something on the console, like make some commands!

P.S. Unfortunately I cannot install anything on this machine, nor Centos!

  • Steven Shiau

    Steven Shiau - 2011-12-27

So do you know if the hardware "Hardware Revision: Rev E" can be detected by Clonezilla live 1.2.9?
Or could you give Clonezilla live 1.2.11-40 (in the testing release, and Linux kernel 3.1.6 is used) a try?

    Steven.

  • Luca Rossi

    Luca Rossi - 2011-12-27

Steven, based on my last test, sure the Rev E isn't supported by 1.2.9 release…

I'll give a try to the new release 1.2.11-40 and report it back.

    Luca Rossi - 2012-01-12

Hello Steven, after holidays a make some other tests and DL385 that previously doesn't work, but as always I got the following error:
    http://i41.tinypic.com/nlwoi9.png

I tried 1.2.11-40 and the latest 1.2.11-46 both debian and ubuntu releases…..

At this point I'll leave clonezilla world and try with Mondo Rescue :-(

BTW, I'm available for any test you wish. For example if you need some logs, just let me know how can help you.
I always used Clonezilla also for my personal PC, and I don't like the idea to leave it for another (untested) software! :-(

OK, if you are familiar with "screen" command, I'd like to see the whole process when you are imaging/restoring. Please remember to enter expert mode and check "-nogui" so I can see the whole process.
    Thanks in advance.

    Steven.

  • Luca Rossi

    Luca Rossi - 2012-01-17

Ok, but how can I grab the whole scrolling logs? Do I need to capture the screen output or is there any other method? (like copying any logs after cloning procedure).

  • Steven Shiau

    Steven Shiau - 2012-01-18

Yes, with screen you can copy and paste all the screen output.
    1. sudo -i
    2. screen
    3. Start clonezilla by running "clonezilla"
    4. Remember to enter expert mode, and choose the option "-nogui"
    5. Once it's done, follow http://web.mit.edu/gnu/doc/html/screen_11.html to do the copy and paste.
    6. Then you can use scp/rsync to copy the file to remote server.

    Steven.

  • Luca Rossi

    Luca Rossi - 2012-01-19

Hello Steven, unfortunately I was not able to use copy/past from screen command. Maybe I don't understand the operation to be done from here: http://web.mit.edu/gnu/doc/html/screen_11.html

However I recorded the screen during the cloning operation:
    http://www.datafilehost.com/download-d8fc4779.html

Let me know if I need to do some other test.

  • Luca Rossi

    Luca Rossi - 2012-01-22

Well, I studied the screen command, and now I know how capture the whole clonezilla log during its execution. Tomorrow morning I'll repeat the test and report it back the output!
