So I did device-image of my entire HD and saved to an external HD. I selected all the default options. During the process CZ reported many cdrom errors just before it started saving the image data. I assume these errors were caused by problems reading the cdrom. Eventually it got past all these errors and everything seemed to work OK.
I started to worry about error messages I saw in file sda-mbr, then I realized this is just a copy of the MBR, and those must be error messages used by the PC bootloader.

Are you sure there is no compatibility with your CD and CD-ROM ?
If you are sure it's not hardware problem, maybe you can give experimental Clonezilla live a try. It comes with newer kernel so it supports newer hardware.
