Which version of Clonezilla live did you use?
It's recommended to use "AMD64" alternative Clonezilla live version, e.g. 20151012-wily-amd64 or 20151207-wily-amd64.
AMD64 version of Clonezilla live is able to chroot i386 system and run grub-install. While i386/i586/686/ verson of Clonezilla live won't be able to chroot an amd64 system then run grub-install.
