Is it possible to exclude based on filetype or directory?
I have a fairly fresh install (1 month) that I'd like to keep as a mostly 'clean slate' restoration option. It has all my preferred software and, after this first bit of time has passed, it's definitely all configured as I like it.
However, there are some directories containing non-essential files (e.g., downloads, music and video). If I could exclude those directories that would be ideal. I won't need them in my backup image.

No.
So far Clonezilla does not know the files on a partition. It just knows the used blocks, not files.
