Here is the problem, I used to have Ubuntu 10.04 on my MacBook 4,1 and it ran fine. I then restored a Windows XP image made by Clonezilla. It restored fine w/o error, but now when I try to boot into Windows, it gives me "Error Loading Operating System" and doesn't go anywhere from there. I have tried to do a repair install with no prevail. I have also tried to fix the MBR, Boot.ini, ran CHKDSK /R (Using install cd), and nothing seems to help. Since Macs use EFI, the other tutorial online really can't help. There is important programs that can only be installed a number of times that I need (why I cloned and not clean installed). Can anyone give me some advice?

I can't help my reaction to the suggested cure to these problems.

…that a huge list that the users should not have to handle.  Truefully that can't handle.    CloneZilla should be handling all these issues with ease.

There appears to be expertise floating around based on what I read here.   That knowledge is not getting into CloneZilla.

How about a radical idea, build a scripting system inside CloneZilla.  A scripting system of knowledge to be used to know what to do with 10,000 little "just-do-this" procedures.  Then every time you find a new problem all you do is change the scripts and the knowledge that decides when to activate particular scripts.

Oh, does that idea frighten you.  That's just too bad.  If you swim in waters with BIG sharks you have to be very very smart.  If some big-idea doesn't make the backup and restore processes of CloneZilla nearly perfect people will vote with their feet and leave.

    Just one man's opinion.

Thanks for the responses but I contacted the company of the software and they gave me 3 more installs. I have decided to try again with Clonezilla, but I may have to use FOG, as that worked for me before. I thought clonezilla may be better as I only have three computers that need to be cloned and re-imaged, but it has little quarks which, like the one I stated before, are defiantly annoying.

    Johnswolter,
Thanks for your proposal. Yes, if we can definitely we should write program for this. However, we have tried to enable the default options in the beginner mode. Therefore normally the restored MS windows should boot successfully. The problem is, when one tries to restore an image to different geometry of hard drive, or different types of machine. In this case, you might need to have MS windows programs to deal with the issues. However, Clonezilla is free/GPL software, so we can not include proprietary software with that.
If you have any patch files (licensed under GPL) about this, we are very happy to take that.
    Thanks.

    Steven.

I suppose having big ideas is easy and creating them is more difficult.  I've spoken with two other IT administrators and all are upset,.  They do not have confidence in the quality of commercial or FOSS backups or recovery software.  Interesting after all these years that is still the case.

Given a united front like the open document standards FOSS backup-recovery could set some standards certainly in the small to medium sized IT areas.  Enterprise sized would take some time.  The developers of FOSS systems like CloneZilla, SystemRescueCD, UlitmateCD, and the list GPL'd imagine & file backups need to start to work together on  backup standards.

I'm focused on GPL backup and bare-meta or file restores, each with consideration of new or different drives.

I and I'm thinking more about partImage and partClone as needing more intelligence within those.  One idea that keeps coming to the front of my thinking is to fork those to include an embedded scripting language like Lua.org.   Gamers use it to develop real-time modifications to interactive games.  Real-time considerations at the lower levels being important for the backup-recovery systems.   At the higher levels scripting can organize backup process.

This new basic software would then be a framework and be more stable.  The scripts then become a way to deal with all the different considerations.  Easy updating is then available by download that can respond quickly without having to wait for each major release.   Anti-Virus software does this daily.  IT admins could also modify or write their own scripts for their own situations.

    Just some thoughts.
