We have a system that has a Ubuntu bootable software RAID 1. I'm trying to use the live CD to make a disk to disk copy of both disks.  It seems to do the copy of the disks okay but when I try to boot off the copy it goes through the grub loader and then just hangs.  It sees the menu.lst because if I hit escape at the grub it shows me the list of boot choices. Any suggestions as to why it might not be booting after the copy.

I don't know why your system refuses to boot, but I have done almost exactly the same thing that you are trying to do, and it worked.  The only difference between what you did and what I did was that I only cloned ONE disk in the RAID 1.  Then I partitioned a blank disk to have the same exact partitions as the cloned disk.  Then I booted off the cloned disk.  MDADM showed the array as degraded.  Then I added in the partitions on the blank disk to the arrays, and mdadm immediately began syncing everything up.  And life was good.

Now, when I booted up (from the cloned disk, with the other disk plugged in, but not yet able to be part of the array, the boot up did appear to hang.  It just sat there for about 2 minutes.  And then it finished booting and everything after that was cake.
