I am in process of upgrading the hard disk of a Sony VAIO VGN-SZ770N laptop from the original 250GB to a 500GB hard disk. The laptop is running Vista.
I used the disk to disk cloning feature with the idea of changing the partition size with gparted later to match the increased disk size.
About 30 minutes into the cloning, an error pops up saying that there is a problem reading certain sectors (I couldn't capture the exact errors) but the cloning process
stops with a "sda1 IO error", basically something went wrong reading the internal hard drive.
I am wondering, the system appears to operate normal.
I did a check disk from windows Vista, that didn't change anything.
What would be the course of action to get past this obstacle?
There are 2 possibilities:
- there really is something wrong with the internal hard disk, but how do I get past the corrupt/unreadable sectors?
- there might be a potential issue with the SATA controller, which would be unlikely, in that case I could take the hard disk out of the computer and clone it over USB.
Any suggestions how to proceed?
Thanks!

Maybe you can use some disk diagnostic tools to make sure your source disk is flawless.
BTW, in the testing or alternative (ubuntu-based) clonezilla live, there is an option in the expert mode you can turn it on, i.e. "--rescue". However, it now only in the device-image mode, not in device-device clone mode. We will add this option in the future release.

Did you try to use "--rescue" option ?
If hardware failure, especially bad sectors, Clonezilla can not handle that very well, since the data on the sectors are broken.
Sorry that Clonezilla live can not work right for you, hope next time if there is no bad sectors, it will work better there.

Forgive me for asking such a simple question to this post, but what disk diagnostic tools are you refering too?
I've run into the same problem. I've used windows xp defragment tool, and error checking tool. I've followed the defragment with C-Cleaner defragger tool and have been unsuccessful in cloning disk to disk. I assume these are the tools you are refering too, but hopeful I'm wrong because using them has not helped me.
The old hard drive is connecting to the motherboard via old school IDE cable. The new hard drive is connected via SATA connection. It that possible that is the reason for my troubles?

I seem to have figured it out. I downloaded "Seatools" for the original 80gb hard drive. It failed the short DST test. I ran the long test and it found errors, but did not say specifically anything on bad sectors. After it corrected the errors it said it passed. I then ran Clonezilla (ubuntu based) again. This time it did clone to the new hard drive. However, I did use "k1" and "r" in advanced mode. When it had finished cloning it told me there were 11 bad sectors that it came across. Also when I booted to the new disk it ran into the same problem here in this thread. https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=3312774&forum_id=394751
and here https://sourceforge.net/forum/forum.php?thread_id=3310651&forum_id=663168
I'm not sure what to do now? Any suggestions? Perhaps reformat the 320gb disk and try it again?
Unfortunately I've spent so much time on this I could have saved it by just starting with a fresh installation on the new hard drive. oh well.
