I have an HP 16500C Mainframe Scope/logic analyser here which i'm trying to backup the internal HDD of.
The trouble is windows can't see it and, so far, neither can clonezilla.... or acronis or gparted. I read somewhere that its possible based on a fat16 with a 'byte invert' whatever one of those is!
/A little background..... The internal HDD in this machine was 'at deaths door' and after about 30mins of me testing it, it opened the door and went through it :(
Luckily some kind chap had left the system floppies in the instruments kit bag, so I replaced the 500Mb (Yes 500 Mb!) hdd with an IDE to Compact Flash adapter, and successfully rebuilt it from the floppies. Phew! However, a couple of the floppies had errors (their quite old now) and so i was wondering if i could use something to backup the disk itself, trouble is so far I can't find anything that will recognise the partition, also I have another similar analyser which i don't have floppies for (hp16700A if anyone out there has come across it)/
Have i missed a CZ expert option that'll do it? or does anyone know of something else?
Answers on a postcard please to....
Cheers,
Carl.

-Make a backup with DOS formatted floppy disks for
the system and data
(Look for the manual of HP 16500C Mainframe Scope/logic analyser:
"The hard drive cannot be duplicated."
"However, if you want system files on a flexible disk, use the appropriate disk
operations, such as store or copy, to store all required system files on a
flexible disk." )
-take an old PC with a power supply of 200..400 Watt
with IDE connector
with USB (if possibly or use the first HDD for the repository)
-assemble the HP-HDD in this PC
-adapt the BIOS for the second HDD
-start only with CD but not from the first HDD
-test the format of the HP-HDD with gparted live (for flash card application)
-take an old clonezilla live CD
I wish you success!

Err, Thanks but I know i can just copy the floppies I have, that's easy. It's the floppies I haven't got ie for the 16700A that make cloning a requirement, just wondered if it might also be possible for the 16500 as re-installing from floppies was so tedious.
Manual - You have the air of a person who has never read an HP/Agilent Manual! (No offense). I have the Manual and the Service manual and neither make a reference to the format of the internal HDD, in fact they don't even describe the process of copying the floppies to the hdd particularly well let alone backing anything up. as for 'googling it' the best instructions i managed to find were at http://opengpib.sourceforge.net/HP16500CHardDriveNotes.html, however not being a linux ninja coupled with the first adapter & CF combo i tried worked, the method described was a bit involved for my liking.
As for last bit Hu? a) I have a dedicated hdd cloning/erasing computer, that's all it does. b) "test the format of the HP....." As i said, CZ reports "nothing to clone" and gparted/acronis/windows report "unrecognized or unconfigured partition" - not really sure what your suggesting? unless i'm supposed to know what "adapt the BIOS" means? (which i don't)
So far the closest thing i have found that might work is something called RAW COPY, i haven't tested this yet as i don't have a spare 1/2gib drive handy and it's a pretty basic software that (presumably) won't re-size things if necessary
"I wish you success!" - I'm gonna need it :)
Edit:
/just found out the 16700A has a 4.3gb SCSI drive in it instead of IDE...... Nuts, plan b for that one then/

Thank you for your insightful hints. I think you have other questions....."
Useless/Pointless/Cryptic and or generally unhelpful comments are not why i posted a question here.
If you have nothing constructive to add, just walk on by.
I apologize for what some might consider as 'waffle', i call it 'background'
I also apologize for moving the goal posts, I didn't know it was scsi until i had the lid off it OK, i was working on the 16500 first - my lab aint big enough to take two of these buggers apart at the same time.
My question however, still stands. Can i use Clonezilla to image a disk/partition when i (or gparted) can't identify what the partition is. and if so how?

"Can i use Clonezilla to image a disk/partition when i (or gparted) can't identify what the partition is. and if so how?" -> Not really. Clonezilla's imaging and cloning is based on partition, so in your case you'd better to use "dd" command to do that.
Steven.

Thanks Steven, that's pretty much the conclusion i had come to. Oh Well.
