i have a outdated clonezilla according to Ubuntu,will updating to most recent version in effect render my older clones useless or can i save them somewhere , then update clonezilla then essentially plug the old clones back in?

Normally yes. You can restore your images with an old or a new clonzilla version.
But
the partitions should now not smaller than before (e.g. when newly formated)
Surely you have allways made an extra backup of important data.
