I tried to use Clonezilla Live from a usb stick to clone from my old SSD to a new one. I didn't get very far with the process as it stopped with a "partclone fail" message. I couldn't get out of Clonezilla so I restarted the computer. After that it would not boot. It just starts up the fans and shows lights, but there's nothing on the monitor. It stays like that for a short time, then powers down, waits a little and tries again. I've tried booting from the usb stick and the old hard drive, I've removed the BIOS battery, I've tried swapping the RAM around, I've had the graphics card out, but none of it makes any difference.
Have I missed something obvious or have I suffered an unforunately timed hardware failure?

Sorry to hear that. Looks like you did have a hardware failure there. Otherwise you should be able to enter BIOS setup or something similar, and you should be able to see the boot loader error or the OS complains about booting...
