Hello,
I am looking for an open source app to use for cloning an xp install. When I bought my used Thinkpad T41, it had a copy of XP cloned to the HDD in the laptop (I upgraded from 40GB to 120GB). I wanted to keep a copy of this XP configuration.
I would then re-install XP using a Thinkpad drivers CD I created and my XP retail disc (license number for the Thinkpad is on the bottom).
Anyway, is there any way of doing this with Clonezilla? I was going to try to clone using System Rescue CD (Partimage?) but Clonezilla sounds interesting.
I am not sure how or if it can clone. Currently, XP is installed as OS, folders etc. on C: taking up 4.6 GB (40GB leftover free space) and on D: is drivers taking up .8 GB with 60GB (approx.) leftover of free space.
I want to learn how to clone so that is part of the reason for this project. I think it is a good way for backups.
Anyway, the aim is to install Linux (1 or 2 distros) following the XP install. I have some experience with grub but not a lot. The other concern is where I can store the image (the cloned portion is only the disk blocks that are written and it will be an image?). Can I use a hard disk in an enclosure connected via usb, perhaps? It is the only idea I had. The Thinkpad only has CD-RW/DVD-ROM optical drive. I am not very experienced at networking.
I have a 500 GB drive I could use and although it is more space than I need, I could accept overwriting the disk (not really being used) I believe that Clonezilla would overwrite whatever is on there when it creates the clone?
Please help advise and if possible explain if my request is doable or makes sense?
I think I might be typing too much so I'll stop here. I hope I have given enough info. I tried to be as brief and to the point as possible.
If you would like to refer to this comment somewhere else in this project, copy and paste the following link:
So sorry to followup so soon but I was wondering if I could use a USB thumb drive to make a clone in the situation I posted above (i.e. in original post). It would be more convenient? I guess it depends on whether it's just written disk blocks are cloned?

Yes, Clonezilla live can do that for you. With live USB flash drive, no problem.
You can refer to this:

//NOTE// Make sure to backup important data if you have in the source disk. Just in case.
