Restore Clone Image to same drive?

I am a CloneZilla Live Newb.. I have made a device-image of my hard drive. and that clone is residing on an external hd. just for testing, could i uninstall some programs, and then restore that image i made back to the same drive and it be like it was before i uninstalled the programs? is that how the device-image works? do i have to reformat my hard drive before i restore the image, or will it just overwrite what is on the drive? Thanks in advance.
