I need to clone a disk and found Clonezilla.

Reading the main page - http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php I ran into something I don't understand. The page says"

In order to use it, you must first prepare a DRBL server AND the machine to be deployed must boot from a network (e.g. PXE/iPXE).

    What is a DRBL server?

To what computer is it refering to: "the machine to be deployed must boot from a network"

I want to simply create a bootable USB flash drive containing Clonezilla, plug in a USB external drive, boot from the USB stick, and clone the HDD.

I found the page about making a bootable USB flash drive - http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live.php and it looks like I would use the "MS Windows Method A: Tuxboot" method to create the USB flash drive.

Could I then do what I want to do, boot (we older timers call it an IPL - Initial Program Load) from the USB flash drive and clone the HDD to an external USB attached drive?

Or do I have to have the DRBL server and the machine bootable from a network.

Any assistance you can provide will be greately apreciated.

That part is indeed about a server environment. That's not what you need.
If you read a bit further down, you can see that clonezilla live is designed to boot from cd or usb and you can save images to a usb device.
I have done that several times and it does work just fine.

      amtech,

      Thanks for the reply.

I suspected that was the case but wanted to be sure. Perhaps the pages need a tad of rewriting to make things clear the first time through - just a thought.

Thanks again. I have decided to go with a CD. It seems the simplest way to get things done - given that the system can be booted from a CD.
