    Dear Sir,

I am searching for an automated backup/restore solution for PC's in the elementary school. At the moment I can do that with an old Symantec ghost.exe (v7).

I should explain you what I want to have :
As many peoples use these PC's, after using,
the original system image should be automatically restored.

At the moment its like that :
The first partition is a WIN XP (NTFS/FAT32) system.
The second partition is a small DOS partition with auto execute ghost.exe script. The 3. Partition is an NTFS partitions where I stock the ghost image file. I use GAG as bootloader where the user can chose if he wants do boot WIN XP normally or DOS for ghost automatic restore (or backup).

As the school has no budget to buy expensive solutions like
Ghost or Acronis, I found Clonezilla which should do the same job, even much better.

But I have some serious installation/configuration problems :
    1. I am novice in Linux !
    2. I could install Clonezilla on the second partition.
    3. I have problems to understand where and how the
automated script will be execute how to mount the disks etc.

So it should be like that :
    1. partition Windows XP
    2. partition clonezilla
    3. partition image file

When the user starts up the PC, he should have a welcome screen.
3 sec without doing anything, the system should boot on partition 1 = XP
The 2. choice is clonezilla menu which should offers again 2. choices :
    1. restore image file stored in the 3. partition (default after 3 sec)
    2. backup 1. partition to image file (overwrite) on 3. partition.

The startup menu should be already there.
But with the clonezilla scripts I have realy problems :-(

Maybe you can kindly help me to tell me how I can do that.

    Merci in advance.

    Harry

      Harry,
Yes, this can be done. All you have to do is to put the Clonezilla live on the harddrive as mentioned here:
      http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/livehd.php

With some of the customized script:
      http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/#Advanced_mode
      and boot parameters:
      http://clonezilla.org/clonezilla-live/doc/fine-print.php?path=./99_Misc/00_live-initramfs-manual.doc#00_live-initramfs-manual.doc

      It's possible to make it.

If you do have any problem about this, please wait for me to enter office next week and email me <steven _at_ nchc org tw> about this. Now I am on vacation.

      Steven.

I'm hoping to do this for XP based laptops sent overseas.  Has anyone done this?  What are the details for doing so?

And I've not been successful with the steps for creating a bootable external restoration of a disk.  I think it's something to do with the /home/partimag link that gets created on the backup (hot clear how that happens).  Very confusing when ocs-live-dev cannot find the image.
