I'm using clonezilla-live-20151012-wily-i386.zip from a thumbdrive to perform a backup to a device running an ssh-server. At some point during the backup (I've done this many times by now, and I cannot seem to predict when it will happen), the running backup will crash with a series of error message statements:
split: /home/partimag/2015-11-24-18-img/sda1.ext4-ptcl-img.gz.aa: Software caused connection abort
Checking the disk space... **********.
Failed to save partition /dev/sda1.
Press "Enter" to continue......
Pressing Enter doesn't seem to do anything, and the backup has been aborted, though the backup files are still present in the /home/partimag folder on the ssh-server device.
Now I have used a different ssh-server device, and the backup completed successfully. But I would like to find the problem so that I can use my chosen ssh-server device.
Where shall I start in diagnosing this problem? Thank you.

Thanks for your suggestion, Steven. I ran memtest, and it resulted in weird and unpredictable results on multiple executions, including shutting down the machine in the middle of the test. Researching the problem further, I physically disassembled the laptop and found that the air vent for cooling the CPU was terribly blocked with dust and other debris which was not visible on the outside of the machine. So I vacuumed out the contaminants and re-assembled the computer. Then when I ran memtest, it passed successfully.
Now the backup runs successfully, but on checking the image, it now dies with: "CRC error, block_id=17535029...", and says:
Partclone fail. Please check /var/log/partclone.log !
The image of this partition is broken: sda1
However, when I tried to get back to the shell to examine partclone.log, the machine was unresponsive. And after rebooting, the partclone.log file was empty.

Looks like there is still hardware issue there. Otherwise normally if Clonezilla hangs due to software issue, then all other users should have reported the same issue.
Therefore please try to fix the hardware issue there.
Steven.

Looks like it's hardware issue. Check the RAM (you can do memtest), network switch, or cables.
Steven.
