    Angbor - 2013-01-09

    Hello!
I try to clone partition, but without success.
    I have:
ASUS N61DA with Win7 and I'd like to make a copy of one (first) partition.
I made bootable CD, connected USB-HDD and then restarted my PC.
I easily passed through dialogs (for beginners) until start of cloning.
But after pressing Y(es)+Enter I see some text about "trying to read and copy MBR that will be usefull for some rescue-programm…" and then all stops.
Just cursor is is flashing, ASUS-HDD led flashing slightly and rapid, periodically USB-HDD led is flashing.
I've been waiting till morning :) And this process has not been completed.
After Ctrl+Alt+Del and rebooting with Win7 I found on USB-HDD few new folders with some files.

    So, what I do wrong?
Any help will be very appreciated :)
    ThanX

Use a .zip file for clonzilla!
Take a 2GB SD card  , new formated with NTFS .

    Download among
    Browse All Files (!) clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae.zip
    All extract..
    go to folder 'clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae'
mark all extracted files and folders in it
    Send to .. USB_SD_card

    Go to USB_SD_card
    G:\utils\win32\makeboot.bat start with open

    Now saving the partitions:
Restart and press button Esc to choice 'USB_SD_card'
    Start Clonezilla in standard mode
    device-image
    local_device

      please insert USB device..

    Then you can see (example)
    sda1 vfat_Winre  #diag for Win_7 recovery
    sda2 ntfs_Win_7 #boot
    sda3 ntfs_Data
    (sda5 ext4_Ubuntu12.04)
sdb1 vfat USB_Flash_Drive ->to save a whole disk image or partitions for sda1,sda2,sda3,sda5

    sdb1 repository
Which directory is for the clonezilla image ..
    / Top_directory-in_the_local_device # use this
    firstFolder Aug-20
    secondFolder Sep-30

Beginner mode: Accept the default options
    save_local-partitions  as an image
saveparts: Input a name for the saved image to use
    2013-01-21-14-img
(*special note! Do not change to
         Y:\disk\2013-01-21-14-img  # it is a linux program)

saveparts: it's recommended in your case
    sda1 ..GB_ntfs.. #diag for Win_7 recovery
    sda2 ..GB_vfat.. #boot
    sda3 ..GB_ntfs..
    That's all.

Thank you a lot, it's really A Big Instruction :)

    So, what I did.
    I've got clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae.zip
On my USB-HDD I made small FAT32 partition primary and active - X.
Unpacked there this ZIP and launched utils\win32\makeboot.bat
Then I rebooted system and start from my X-boot-partition - Clonezilla was started.
OK, now I went through all these dialogs and pressed Enter and after Y + Enter.
Process started - but on screen was no any counters or progressbar or any of this staff.

I put on Youtube movie about my Leds :)
    http://youtu.be/hr3GUnbH-QE
First one  is the Led on my Notebook, and second one (blue with red) - Leds on my USB-HDD.

    At 05 A.M. I went to sleep.
At 01 P.M. (after 8 houres) I saw that "A Car still there" - I try to stop it with ctrl+alt+del but PC was completely stuck.
After hard-reboot I found in target folder few files

One of them is 39.6 GB
    My partition is 80 GB

So, my question is - what I did wrong?
Is it because I didn't wait long enough?

    With best regards

-Choice the complete english version. Sometimes it gives translation errors, not allowed translations of system variables.
-You can test clonezilla with md5sum
-In your case the time for compressed files could be about 40 GB/4 hours.

OK, I will try to make it all in English and will see.

    Hello everybody!
Today (with English version) I waited really long time - 16 hours. And after this moment my patience was lost :)
After rebooting I found in target folder some files with total size of 75.6 GB (more than yesterday , I can see it :) )
So, it looks like this process in my case will take around 20 or 22 hours! Too much!
Really strange - the same operation (copying partition) with "MiniTool Partition Wizard" took around 2 hours.
And last question (it really confuse me).
After starting the process of cloning by pressing "Y+Enter" on my screen i see:

    Ok, let's do it!!
    Shutting down the logical …
    bla-bla-bla
    bla-bla-bla
    Finished shutting down etc. …
Checking the integrity of partition table in the disk /dev/sda…
Reading the partition table for /dev/sda… RETVAL 0
The first partition of disk starts at 457466940
Saving the hidden data between MBR… bla-bla-bla … by:
    dd if dev/sda of=/home/partimg/abc/sda-hidden-data-after-mbr skip=1 bs=512 count 457466939

And after this text there is only flashing cursor.
Is it normal or there will be some displaying of progress?

And strange - the biggest file in target folder is "sda-hidden-data-after-mbr" - strange. Or is this file - file of partition image?

I almost lost my hope for a successful end with Clonezilla :(

In point 4 we can see:
    sda-chs.sf (37B)
    sda-hidden-data-after-mbr (31,7kB)
    sda-mbr (512B) , **where is that ? **
    sda-pt.parted (722 B)
    sda-pt.parted.compact (609B)
    sda-pt.sf (463B)
Info-saved-by-cmd.txt (82B) That comes at the end only.

Is it possible you can start Windows 7 without MBR (master boot record) or
is anything with clonezilla (md5sum) or
your external USB device (with 2 Partitions, one for clonzilla , the other for the repository)?

In point 1 you have written:
"trying to read and copy MBR that will be usefull for some rescue-programm…" and then all stops.
    There is no MBR.

    In point 2:
saveparts: it's recommended in your case
    sda1 ..GB_ntfs.. #diag for Win_7 recovery
    sda2 ..GB_vfat.. #boot
    sda3 ..GB_ntfs..
Look at this with 'gparted live'.

Or make a complete disk image first.

    #checksum
When you use an .iso file .
I think you have downloaded the checksum too. (http://www.clonezilla.org/downloads/stable/checksums.php)
    To obtain their md5 hashes:
Open 2 windows. You should see
    'md5sums.exe'  (in one window)
    'clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae.iso'  (in other window)
    Then with the mouse drag
    'clonezilla-live-2.0.1-15-i686-pae.iso'
    over
    'md5sums.exe'
    and let it fallen.
Now you can see a DOS window with the md5 hashes and compare it with downloaded checksum.

your external USB device (with 2 Partitions, one for clonzilla , the other for the repository)?

    yes, is it bad? :)
I'm sorry, my LINUX-level really low (like my English), and my problem with Clonezilla is just kindergarten-problem and second experiment after playing with Fedora.
Tomorrow I will leave my town for one week, and then I will continue my exercises.
I really hope to have yours help with future.
    Best regards
    Hasta la vista!

Please give Clonezilla live 20130110-raring or 2.1.0-8 a try. The hidden data after MBR will be limited to smaller size. It won't dump all.

    Steven.
